Unit# 4 Algebraic Expressions And Algebraic Formulas Definitions

1. Algebraic Expression: When operations of addition and subtraction are applied to algebraic terms we obtain an algebraic expression. For instance, 5x2 3x +

2. Polynomial: An expression that can have constants, variables and exponents but not divisible by a variable and exponents can only be 0,1,2,3, etc. It cant have an infinite number of terms. e.g.; 2x4 + 3x2 + 3

3. Leading Co-efficient of the Polynomial: The co-efficient an of the highest power of x is called the leading co-efficient of the polynomial.

4. Rational Expression: The quotient of two polynomials p(x) and q(x) , where q(x) is a non-zero polynomial, is called a rational expression . For example,

5. Rational Expression in Lowest Form: The rational expression is said to be in its lowest form if p(x) and q(x)are polynomials with integral coefficient and have no common factor. For example, is in its lowest form.

6. Working rule to reduce a rational expression to its lowest form: Let the given rational expression be Step 1: Factorize each of the two polynomials p(x) and q(x). Step 2: Find H.C.F of p(x) and q(x). Step 3: Divide the numerator p(x) and the denominator q(x) by the H.C.F. of p(x) and q(x). The rational expression so obtained , is in its lowest terms.

7. Evaluation of Algebraic Expression at some particular Real Number: If specific numbers are substituted for the variables in an algebraic expression, the resulting number is called the value of the expression.

8. Surd: An irrational radical with rational radicand is called a surd. e.g., ,

9. Order of the Surd or Surd Index: For the Surd , n is called surd index or the order of the surd. e.g.; is the third order index.

10. Monomial Surd: A surd which contains a single term is called a monomial surd. e.g., ,

11. Binomial Surd: A surd which contains sum of two monomial surds or sum of a monomial surd and a rational number is called a binomial surd. e.g., + , 2+

12. Rationalizing Factor: If the product of two surds is a rational number , then each surd is called the rationalizing factor of the other.

13. Rationalization: The process of multiplying the given surd by its rationalizing factor to get a rational number as product is called rationalization of the given surd.

14. Conjugate Surds: Two binomial surds of second order differing only in sign connecting their terms are called conjugate surds. Thus and are conjugate surds of each other. Mudassar Nazar Notes Published by Asghar Ali Page 2
