The document discusses various technologies used for the separation, transformation, and recycling of waste materials. It describes how materials recovery facilities separate commingled municipal solid waste into reusable materials like paper, plastics, glass and metals through various unit operations. These include size reduction, screening, density separation, magnetic and electric field separation, and densification equipment. The document also covers gasification and pyrolysis processes that can be used to transform organic waste fractions into refuse-derived fuel or generate energy.

Separation, Transformation and Recycling of Waste Materials
Materials Separation & Processing Technologies
INTRODUCTION As collected Wastes: commingled municipal solid waste(MSW) is biologically unstable, potentially odorous and essentially unstable. Materials Recovery Facilities(MRF) used to separate commingled MSW into useable materials. Paper, plastics, glass metals etc. can be recovered and used as feedstock for remanufacturing into new products. Organic fractions can be used for composting or refuse-derived fuel(RDF) for energy recovery. Separation and Processing of Waste Materials To modify the physical characteristics so that the waste components can be removed easily. To remove specific components and contaminants from the waste stream.
Unit Operations for the Separation and Processing of Waste Materials
Selection of Size Reduction Equipment
Selection of Screening Equipment
Selection of Density Separation Equipment
Selection of Magnetic and electric Field Separation Equipment
