PROJECT : RAICHUR 1x250MW UNIT#8 PROBLEM : FREQUENT TRIPPING OF VFD ON BUS HOG OF HMPG CURRENT HUNTING During uncoupled Motor trial run of the VFD ID fan 8B, CH2 tripped on load PLL fault. On investigation it was observed that Ch 2 was tripped due to BUS HOG fault. It was suspected that Bus Hog fault may be due to vibration of SEM rack

as Lock bars were not fixed. SEM lock bars were fixed and the motor restarted in CH2 and got tripped on Bus Hog after 2 hours. Further following checks were carried out. 1. Checked for the proper insertion of EPROMS in all cards and found no improvement. Suspected HMPG card failure. 2. Accordingly HMPG card was sent to EDN for rectification. After rectification of the card, trail run of Motor with CH-2 was completed. During Coupled trial run, CH-2 current hunting was observed. It was suspected that hunting was due to Exciter Phase sequence reversal. Even after Phase sequence reversal Current hunting persisted. 3. Waveforms of load current and gating signal in NSFC-2D and NLIB-1D at IA and SIG1, IB-SIG3, IC-SIG5 should be as per the manual as shown in the fig

During the above checking, it was noticed that IA signal on NLIB-1D was missing. Fan was switched off and CT connections were tightened and also checked whether any glow tube across got CT blown out. On further checking it was found that the CT secondary connection in XTFY card through a connector was not making contact. This was rectified and current hunting was resolved. However during fan trial run, Bus Hog problem was reoccurred. This problem was referred to EDN. EDN service engineer team reached site and HLCB card was replaced with new cards and found problem still persisted. Both HMPG cards of ID fan-B was replaced and trial run of fan with both channels was completed successfully. Suggestion: For avoiding Bus Hog problem the following checks are to be carried out during commissioning. 1. Ensure the Initialization of programme to be completed. 2. Ensure all EPROMS are inserted properly before energising. 3. After testing completion, ensure the fixing of all Lock bars for SEM rack before Motor & fan trail run. 4. SEM rack cards are to be cleaned regularly to avoid dust settling on the electronic cards. 5. ESP room to be maintained dust free. Courtesy by: 1. MR.M.N.CHANDRASEKHAR / SDGM / BHEL / RAICHUR SITE 2.
