CHEMISTRY 151 Chang Chapter 7 Atomic Structure OBJECTIVES:

MCCC Mr. Walmer

1.) Briefly summarize the historical developments and models in atomic structure from Dalton through Schrodinger. 2.) Explain Black Body radiation, the ultraviolet catastrophe and Plancks Quantum Theory. 3.) Describe the characteristics (wavelength, frequency and amplitude) of electromagnetic radiation and the kinds of electromagnetic radiation. 4.) Use the equations associated with light to calculate wavelength, frequency and energy. 5.) Explain the photoelectric effect and how Einstein used the quantum theory to explain the photoelectric effect. 6.) Use the equations associated with the photoelectric effect to carry out calculations associated with the photoelectric effect. 7.) Explain the difference between a brightline spectrum and a continuous spectrum. 8.) Summarize the points of the Bohr model of the atom. 9.) Use the Bohr equations to calculate energy and energy changes for electrons and electron orbits. 10.) Explain how the brightline spectrum of an element supports Bohrs Theory. 11.) Explain the Wave Particle Duality Theory of Nature. 12.) Summarize Heisenbergs Uncertainty principle and describe the impact this had on the Bohr Model of the atom. 13.) Use Heisenbergs Uncertainty Principle to calculate uncertainties in momentum or position. 14.) Explain the Quantum Mechanical (Wave Mechanical) Model of the atom and the significance of the Schrodinger Equation. 15.) Summarize how to determine and the significance of the four quantum numbers. 16.) Relate the quantum numbers to the energy level diagram. 17.) Write the electron configurations of the elements using the diagonal rule and the Periodic Table. 18.) Use the Aufbau Principle, Pauli Exclusion Prinicple and Hunds rule to describe electron filling. 19.) Define and identify if an element is paramagnetic or diamagnetic.
