3 Special Products Special Products: The square of a binomial:

NAME:_________________________

( A + B) 2 ( A B) 2

= ________________
= ________________

The product of the sum and difference of two terms:

( A + B )( A B ) = _________________

Using the foil method we can always find these products. Sometimes we find the product by following the form: To find ( 3 x 2 ) 2 , I can use A = 3 x and B = 2 in the second formula above:

( A B) 2

= ( 3 x ) 2( 3x )( 2) + ( 2) = __ x 2 ___ x + ____
2

= A 2 2 AB + B 2

It should seem unnecessary to have to remember these formulas when we can use the foil method to find these products. The reason we practice using the formulas this way is to help us in the next chapter; factoring. EXAMPLE: Use the formulas above to find the following: a.) ( 4 x 2 )( 4 x + 2 )
A = ____ B = _____
2

3 4 b.) x 3 5

A = ____ B = _____

c.) ( x 2 5)( x 2 + 5)

A = ____ B = _____

d.) (3 x 2 2 )

A = ____ B = _____

Notice the form all of these formulas take on: 1.) The first and last terms are perfect squares. 2.) The middle term is twice the product of the square roots of the first and last terms. EXAMPLE: Find the value of k so that the polynomial is a perfect square trinomial a.) 4 x 2 + 12 x + k b.)
9 2 x kx + 16 4
