I. Readings/Discussions :
Look at the patterns in each row. Draw the shapes/objects in the blanks that continues the pattern:

a. , , , , , ,____, ____, ____.

b. , ,,, , , , , , , _____,_____,_____.
,
c. 2 3 4 , 7 6 5 , 8 9 10 , ___, _____,_____
How do you find the next answers? Are patterns useful in getting the answers? Patterns are useful
finding products of polynomials and Special Products.

Task 1: Product of Two Binomials

Illustrative Example: Find the product of ( x + 2 ) ( x + 4 )

F L

( x+2)(x+4)
I
O

First terms : x ● x = x2
Outer terms : x ● 4 = 4x Since 4x and 2x are similar/like terms we can
Inner terms : 2 ● x = 2x combine them, 4x + 2x = 6x
Last terms : 2 ● 4 = 8
Thus, ( x + 2 ) ( x + 4 ) = x2 + 6 x + 8
The area of the rectangle is equivalent to the product of (a + b ) ( c + d ) which is ac + ad + bc +bd. This is the
general form of the product of two binomials. This form is called FOIL method where the letters of FOIL stands
for First, Outer, Inner, Last.

Task 2 : Product of the sum and difference of two terms

Consider this binomial ( x + 3 ) ( x – 3 ) using the FOIL method

First : x ● x = x2
Outer : x ● -3 = -3x Combining similar/like terms 3x + (- 3x ), it becomes zero
Inner : 3 ● x = 3x Thus, ( x + 3 ) ( x – 3 ) = x2 - 9
Last : 3 ● -3 = - 9

1
Questions to ponder:

1. What kind of polynomial is the product of (x + 3 ) (x – 3 ) ?

2. Is there a pattern for the products of these factors? Explain.

The factors in the activity are called the sum and difference of two terms. One of the factors is the sum of
the terms and the other factor is their difference. The general form is (a + b ) ( a – b ) = a2 – b2, where the product
is the difference of two squares.

Task 3 : Square of a Binomial

How about squaring this binomial (x + 5 ) ?

( x + 5 )2 = ( x + 5 ) ( x + 5 ) using the FOIL method, what is the product of
The First terms? Outer terms? Inner terms? Last terms?
Solution :
First : x ● x = x2
Outer: : x ● 5 = 5x Adding these two similar terms, the sum is
Inner : 5 ● x = 5x 10x, thus, (x+5)2 = x2 + 10x + 25
Last : 5 ● 5 = 25

What is the general form for the square of a binomial?

Answer: ( a2 ± 2ab + b2 )
Task 4 : Cube of a binomial
How do we express this binomial (x + 2)3 ?
Solution: ( x + 2 )3 = ( x + 2 ) (x + 2 ) ( x + 2 )
( x + 2 ) ( x + 2 )2
( x + 2 ) ( x2 + 4x + 4 ) Squaring a binomial
2 2
x( x + 4x + 4) + 2( x + 4x + 4 ) Distributive Property
3 2 2
x + 4x +4x + 2x + 8x + 8 ) Distributive Property
3 2
x + 6x + 12x + 8 Combining similar terms

The product indicates that the cube of a binomial is equal to the sum of four terms, namely :

First term : cube of the first term

Second Term : thrice the product of the square of the first term, and the
second term
Third term : thrice the product of the first term, and the square of the
second term
Fourth term : the cube of the second term

2
The cube of a binomial has the general form,( a ± b )3 = a3 ± 3a2b + 3ab2 ± b3

Example : ( n + 3 )3
First term : n3
Second term : 9n2
Third term : 27n
Fourth term : 27
Thus, the product is n3 + 9n2 + 27n + 27

Task 5 : Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial

How about multiplying a binomial by a trinomial?

Look at this: ( x+ 3 ) ( x2 - 3x + 9 )

a.) ( x + 3 ) ( x2- 3x + 9 ) = x3 - 3x2 + 9x + 3x2 – 9x + 27 Distributive Property

= x3 -3x2 + 9x + 3x2 -9x + 27 Combining similar terms
= x3 + 27

b.) (x -3 ) ( x2 + 3x + 9) = x3 + 3x2 + 9x -3x2 -9x -27 Distributive Property and

= x3 – 27 combining similar terms

The product of a binomial and a trinomial can be expressed as the sum and difference of two cubes:
( a + b ) (a2 –ab + b2) = a3 + b3
( a – b ) ( a2 +ab + b2) = a3 – b3
