I. Readings/Discussions :
Look at the patterns in each row. Draw the shapes/objects in the blanks that continues the pattern:
b. , ,,, , , , , , , _____,_____,_____.
,
c. 2 3 4 , 7 6 5 , 8 9 10 , ___, _____,_____
How do you find the next answers? Are patterns useful in getting the answers? Patterns are useful
finding products of polynomials and Special Products.

( x+2)(x+4)

First terms : x ● x = x2
Outer terms : x ● 4 = 4x Since 4x and 2x are similar/like terms we can
Inner terms : 2 ● x = 2x combine them, 4x + 2x = 6x
Last terms : 2 ● 4 = 8
Thus, ( x + 2 ) ( x + 4 ) = x2 + 6 x + 8
The area of the rectangle is equivalent to the product of (a + b ) ( c + d ) which is ac + ad + bc +bd. This is the
general form of the product of two binomials. This form is called FOIL method where the letters of FOIL stands
for First, Outer, Inner, Last.

Questions to ponder:
The factors in the activity are called the sum and difference of two terms. One of the factors is the sum of
the terms and the other factor is their difference. The general form is (a + b ) ( a – b ) = a2 – b2, where the product
is the difference of two squares.
The product indicates that the cube of a binomial is equal to the sum of four terms, namely :
2
The cube of a binomial has the general form,( a ± b )3 = a3 ± 3a2b + 3ab2 ± b3
Example : ( n + 3 )3
First term : n3
Second term : 9n2
Third term : 27n
Fourth term : 27
Thus, the product is n3 + 9n2 + 27n + 27
The product of a binomial and a trinomial can be expressed as the sum and difference of two cubes:
( a + b ) (a2 –ab + b2) = a3 + b3
( a – b ) ( a2 +ab + b2) = a3 – b3

GUIDE
For the Teacher: Advise the students to read the reading and discussion portion before they attempt to answer the practice
exercises. Going through the parts sequentially will help them understand easily the topic.
For the Learner: Read through the self-learning home task from the first part to the last part. Doing so, will help you
understand better the topic.
For the Parent/Home Tutor: Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the self-learning home task from beginning
to end to ensure proper understanding of the concepts.
