Lesson/Topic: Multiplication and Division of polynomials

Competency: The learner applies the laws of exponents in multiplying and dividing polynomials
Lesson Objective/s:
1. define multiplication and division of polynomials
2. determine what type of polynomial it is
3. apply the learnings in real life situation

Key Concept
Multiplying Polynomials
- You will solve the product of two polynomials in three. First, you will use algebra blocks. You can
represent the terms of the polynomials using blocks of different sizes and colors to show their product.
Second, you will use lattice multiplication. Last, you will solve for the product algebraically- by the
FOIL method and systematic multiplication.
Product of a Monomial and a polynomial
- Multiplying a monomial by a polynomial is much easier than any other products of the different kinds
of polynomial. The basic rule is to multiply the monomial by every term of the polynomial and simplify
each product.
1. What is the product of 3x and x3 + 2x2 – 5x + 6?
3x – is a monomial
x3 + 2x2 – 5x + 6 – is a polynomial
solution:
(3x) (x3 + 2x2 – 5x + 6)
= 3x(x3) + 3x(2x2) + 3x(-5x) + 3x (6)
= 3x4 + 6x3 – 15x2 + 18x
Product of two Binomials
- You can multiply polynomials algebraically by systematic multiplication. One of the ways of
multiplying polynomials systematically is the FOIL METHOD. It is the classic method in multiplying
two binomials. The FOIL acronym means that you have to multiply the following terms as shown
below:

F first terms of the binomials (x + 5) (x – 7);

O outer terms of the binomials (x + 5) (x + 7);

I inner terms of the binomials (x + 5) (x + 7); and

L last terms of the binomials (x + 5) (x + 7).

Product of the Sum and Difference of Two Terms

- The sum and difference of two terms means two binomials showing the sum the sum and difference of
two quantities. For example, the sum and difference of x and y is represented as (x + y) and (x -y).
You can use the FOIL method too.
F (x) (x) = x2
O (x) (-y) = -xy
I (y) (x) = xy
L (y) (-y) = -y2

x2 + (-xy) + (xy) + (-y2) = x2 – xy =xy – y2 = x2 – y2

The Square of a Binomial

- The square of a binomial is the product of a binomial and the binomial itself.
1. (a + 2)2 = (a + 2) (a + 2)
= (a) (a) + (2) (a) + (2) (a) + (2) (2)
= a2 + 4a + 4

Cube of a Binomial and Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial

- The cube of binomial means the product of a binomial when it is multiplied by itself three times.
1. (a + 2)3 = (a + 2)2 (a + 2) = (a2 + 4a + 4) (a + 2)
= a3 + 4a2 + 4a + 2a2 + 8a + 8
= a3 + 6a2 + 12a + 8

Dividing Polynomials
- There are two methods of dividing polynomials depending on what the divisor is. In this part, you will
be shown the two kinds of divisors—a monomial and a polynomial, which can be a binomial, a
trinomial, and others.
 Dividing a Polynomial by a Monomial
• Quantities in a fraction bar also show ratio or quotient.
24
Example: the ratio of 24 and 28
8
The quotient when 24 is divided by 8
24
=3
8
 Dividing a Polynomial by a Polynomial
• The process of dividing a polynomial by another polynomial is similar to the
process of long division.
Example: x +2 √ x 2 +10 x+16

x+8
x +2 √ x +10 x+16
2

-(x2 + 2x)
8x + 16
-(8x + 16)
0
The quotient is x + 8.
