THE SPECIAL PRODUCTS

I. LEARNING CONTEXT
Certain types of binomial multiplication sometimes produce results that are called special
products. Special products have predictable terms. Although the distributive property can
always be used to multiply any binomials, recognition of those that produce special products
provides a problem-solving shortcut.
1) Product of two binomial
FOIL is an acronym for the order of multiplying terms in a product of two binomials.
Suppose the binomials were (x +3) (x +5).

2) Product of the sum and difference of two terms

This one arises from multiplication of the sum of two
terms by the difference of the same two terms.

Example
Proble (x + 8)(x – 8)
m
  x(x – 8) + 8(x – 8)   Multiply each term in the
first binomial by the
second binomial
  x2 – 8x + 8x – 64   Distribute.
  x2  – 64   Add like terms.

Answer X2  – 64
3) Square of a Binomial
The number being squared is the length of the side of
the square and the product is represented by the area
of that square. this special product results into Perfect
Square Trinomial  (PST)

Example
Proble Find (x + 5)2
m
Multiply the binomial by itself –
(x + 5)(x + 5) square it.
      Use the distributive property to
x(x + 5) + 5(x + 5) multiply each term of the first
binomial by the second binomial.
  x2 + 5x + 5x + 25   Group like terms together.
  x2  + 10x + 25   Combine like terms.
x2  + 10x + 25

Answer
4) Cube of a binomial
The cube of a binomial is defined as the
multiplication of a binomial 3 times to
itself

Example
Problem (3x + 2y)3

 (a + b)3 = a3 + 3ab(a + b) + b

Replace a = 3x b = 2y
(3x + 2y)3 = (3x)3+3(3x)(2x)(3x+2y) + 2y
= 27x3 + 8y3 + 18xy(3x + 2y)
= 27x3 + 8y3 + 54x2y + 36xy2

5) Thus, the cube of the binomial (3x + 2y) Product of binomial and trinomial
is 27x3 + 8y3 + 54x2y + 36xy2. the FOIL method will not work in
this case, but we can use either
the Distributive Property or the Vertical Method
Example
Problem (5a + b) (a+b+c)
 (5a X a) +(5a X b) + (5a X c) + (b X a) +(b X b) + (b X c) apply Distributive law
=  5a2 + 5ab + 5ac + ab + b2 + bc
= 5a2 + b2 + 5ab + ab + 5ac + bc Rearrange the terms
= 5a2 + b2 + 6ab + 5ac + bc Add like terms (5ab + ab = 6ab)

Hence, (5a + b) (a + b + c) = 5a2 + b2 + 6ab + 5ac + bc
