I.WHAT
HAPPENED?

A. INTRODUCTION
Factoring is the process of finding the factors or what to multiply
together to get an expression. It is like splitting an expression into a
multiplication of simpler expressions. Factoring is the opposite of expanding.

Expand

2(y + 3) 2y + 6

Factor
It is easy to write the polynomials in factored form when they have
common monomial factor and factoring the polynomials applying special
products. How about if the polynomial have no common monomial factor
other than 1?
B. SUBJECT MATTER
“Factoring Polynomials By Grouping Terms”
C. Drill/Review
Let us check if you can recall our previous lesson. Give the factors of the
following polynomials.

1. 15 x 2+ 10 xy
2. (9 x 2−16)
3. (25 a 2−10 ab+b 2)

4. ( a 3+ b3 )

5. ( x 2− y 2 )

ANSWER
II. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO
KNOW?

PRESENTATION:
There are cases when the terms of a polynomial have no common monomial
factor other than 1. We can still factor it by grouping terms. Factoring by grouping
method is usually applied when factoring a polynomial of four or more terms.
Let us considered the following examples.

1. ac +ad +bc +bd Given

= (ac + ad) + (bc + bd) Group the terms having common
factor into two binomials.
= a(c + d) + b( c + d) Get the common monomial factor of
each group
= (c + d)(a + b) Take out the common binomial factor
and get the other factor

2. 15 ay−2 bx−6 by+5 ax Given

¿ (15 ay + 5ax) – (2bx + 6by) Group the terms having common
factor into two binomials. (Note: - 6by
– 2bx is equal to –(2bx + 6by)
applying the distributive property )
= 5a (3y + x) – 2b (x + 3y) Get the common monomial factor of
each group.
= (x + 3y) (5a – 2b) Take out the common binomial factor
and get the other factor. (Note:
(3y + x ) is the same as (x + 3y) )

3. 9x3 + 36x2 – 4x – 16 Given

= (9x3 + 36x2 ) – (4x + 16) Group the terms having common

factor into two binomials.

= 9x2( x + 4) – 4(x + 4) Get the common monomial factor of

each group.

= (x + 4)(9x2 – 4) Take out the common binomial factor

and get the other factor.

=(x + 4) (3x + 2)(3x – 2) Factor (9x2 – 4) applying the

difference of two squares.
4. 25a2 – 30ab – 9b + 15a + 9b2 Given
= (25a2 – 30ab + 9b2) + (15 a – 9b) Group the terms that can be factored
using special product and terms
having common monomial factors.

= (5a – 3b)2 + 3 (5a – 3b) Factor each group.

= (5a – 3b)(5a – 3b) + 3 Take out the common binomial factor

and get the other factor.

= (5a – 3b) (5a – 3b + 3) Simplify.
