Who we are
History & Activities
In 1971 the Library Trustees, Director, Friends of the Library, and other interested community members founded the North Hampton Historical Society. It produced in short order two publications Scenes of the Past in North Hampton, a booklet of historic photographs, and a rendering of the 1857 Chace map with illustrations added by Benjamin C. Newell. Proceeds were used to furnish the New Hampshire Room of the new Library. Then in 1978 it assisted in funding the completion of the Towns only published history The Way it was in North Hampton by Stillman Moulton Hobbs and Helen Davis Hobbs. The New Hampshire Room housed the Societys collection of historical documents, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera and artifacts mostly donated by townspeople. For the past ten years, the collection has resided in a caged-off area of the records storage room of Town Ofces. The Curator responds to inquiries by conducting research and providing information or copies of needed materials. Through the Curators efforts, donations have been accessioned to provide intellectual and physical control over the materials, and preserved by rehousing them in archival quality enclosures. The small exhibit area in the Clerk / Collectors Building allows all to see some of the artifacts. The Societys chief outreach effort is its Spring and Fall program of presentations on historical topics relating to the town, region and New Hampshire. Special member events occur during the year.
