1) a) How many 128x8 RAM chips are needed to provide a memory capacity of 2048 bytes.

a) How many lines of address bus must be used to access 2048 bytes of memory. How many of these lines will be common to all chips. b) How many lines must be decoded for the chip select ? specify the size of the decoder. [May 2005 & May 2007] a) 2048/128 =16 chips. b) 2048 = (2 power 11) = 11 address lines are needed to address 2048 bytes. 128 = (2 power 7) = 7 lines to address the chip. c) 4x16 decoder. 4 lines to decoders for selecting the16 chips.

2) A computer uses RAM chips of 1024x1 capacity. a) How many chips are needed and how should their address lines be connected to provide a memory capacity of 1024 bytes. b) How many chips are needed to provide a memory capacity of 16kB. Explain in words how the chips are to be connected to the address bus. a) 8 chips are needed with the address lines connected in parallel. b) 16x8 = 128 chips. Use 14 address lines ( 16k =(2 power 14)) 10 lines to specify the chip address 4 lines are decoded in to 16 chip select inputs. 3) A ROM hip[ of 1024x8 bits has 4 select inputs and operates from a 5 v power supply .How many pins are needed for the IC package. 10 pins for the inputs , 4 for chip select 8 for outputs 2 for power. 4) A magnetic disk has the following parameters. Ts Average time to position the magnetic head over a track. R Rotation speed of the disk in revolution per second. Nt number of bits per track Ns Number of bits per sector. Calculate average time Ta that it will take to read one sector. Average time =Ts + Time for half revolution + Time to read a sector. Ta =Ts+1/2R+ Ns/Nt =1/R 5) What is the transfer rate of an 8 track magnetic tape whose speed is 120 inches per second , whose density is 1600 bits per inch. 8 track tape reads 8 bits ( one character) at the same time. Transfer rate =1600 *120=19200 char/s
