What you mean by Optimum design? 2. What are the steps involved in machine design process? 3. What is the importance of principal sress? 4. State Rankines theory or maximum principal stress theory 5. What are the methods of reducing stress concentration? PART B (2 16 = 32 Marks + 8 Marks = 40 Marks) 6.(a) The C-frame of100kN capacity press is shown in fig.(6a) If the frame is made up of grey cast iron and the factor of safety is 3, determine the dimensions of the frame. (or) 6.(b) A mass of 50 kg drops from 25 mm at the center of a 250mm long simply supported beam. The beam has square cross section. It is made up of steel 30C8 Syt=400N/mm2 and factor of safety as 2. Take E= 207000N/mm2.Determine the dimensions of cross section 7.(a)A Cantilever beam made up of C40 steel of circular cross section is subjected to a load that varies from F (compressive) to 3F(tensile)as shown in fig 7(a). Determine the value of F.Assume factor of safety as 2.1, stress concentration factor Kt =1.42, Notch sensitivity factor q=0.9, surface finish factor Ksf=0.85, Size factor K sz=0.86 (or) 7.(b) A transmission shaft is subjected to a fluctuating torque that varies from 120 Nm to 500Nm.If Kt=1.5, F.o.S.=2 q=1, The shaft material is C45 steel. Determine the reqd diameter of the shaft. 8. (a)A steel bar of 40 mm dia and 300 mm length is subjected a torque of 1 kNm and other loads as shown in fig(8a). If the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the bar material is 450 N/mm2 and 250 N/mm2 respectively. Determine the factor of safety by Max principal stress theory (or) 8.(b)A mild steel shaft of 4 cm dia is subjected to a B.M of 150000 N cm and atorque of T. If the yield strength of the steel in tension is 30000 N/cm2. Find the max value of T without yielding of the shaft by Max shear stress theory
