Child: Muaz Date: 28th August 2013 Written by: Teacher Natasha Kia ora/As-salamu alaykum Muaz and

whnau, This week our Kiwi group has had lower numbers with the increase in the number of our Tui children. This meant Muaz and his friends were able to use the under two classroom for their sessions something Muaz found very exciting, returning to familiar sites, and a quieter room. But it did not stay quiet for long! Muaz, I heard you chatting away with Layan and Fawwaz not just a few words, but a long conversation! I turned to Teacher Bushra, who confirmed ever since Ramadan you have been contributing a lot more verbally while in smaller group settings! When Teacher Huda arrived, you approached me to tell me all about it a three minute explanation! The entire time you used differences in pitch and nonverbal cues to support yourself. Review of learning Wow Muaz, I am so impressed to hear you expressing your feelings and ideas more, this demonstrates the disposition of confidence. Along with communicating more, you are also confident to approach peers and teachers to initiate conversations. This has resulted in you having more courage, curiosity, trust and playfulness as you take an interest and choose what and who to be involved with during free choice time. Where to next? Now that Muaz is confident in communicating, his teachers will begin to focus on his English language while continuing to support his contributions. We plan to do this by ensuring smaller group time opportunities and plenty of free choice time is provided. This will encourage Muaz to continue building meaningful relationships and practice his communication, in particular conversational language with peers at a similar level to him. This will allow scaffolding and an ako approach to take place. By this we mean as a learner he will gain more language skills by a more experienced/skilled friend, while

also being a teacher for his less experienced/skilled friends being the learner and teacher at the same time ensuring his confidence is maintained. His teachers will continue to role model a wide variety of vocabulary, and engage him daily in various conversations.
