HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY
We Believe That Homework Is Effective When It Serves As A Critical Component To The Continued Learning Of A Child

1. Deepen Understandings of Concepts 2. Practice New Skills Over Time 3. Extend Educational Opportunities Beyond The Walls Of The Classroom 4. Develop Independent Learning Habits

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
1. Based on researched best practices students may be assigned a maximum of ten minutes of homework multiplied by their grade level per night. (Example; 1st grade may be assigned no more than ten minutes of homework per night; fourth grade may be assigned no more than forty minutes of homework per night). Please note that

teachers may determine that homework is not necessary to support learning.

2. Homework will only be assigned Monday through Thursday. 3. Homework time for any grade level is proportioned so that equal time is dedicated to the classroom and supporting German. The purpose in prioritizing German is to support native German speakers. 4. The different learning needs of students will be considered when assigning Homework. 5. Reading for pleasure and instrument practice is not considered homework.

6. Homework will not be assigned or expected in our Early Childhood classes. 7. There will be days/weeks that are connected to holidays and special events when homework will not be assigned to give families more time for celebration and reflection.

PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO

1. Help children set-up a homework routine at home. 2. Provide a quiet space, with adequate supplies, for children to work. 3. Be available to answer questions ONLY as needed. Students should be able to complete homework independently. 4. Stop your child from working if it is taking them longer than our guidelines support. (1st grade = ten minutes, 4th grade = 40 minutes) and let their teacher know that the assigned homework required more time than the outlined amount. Your communication will help us to monitor our homework time.
