2 Tips to learn vocabulary efficiently :

When you learn a new word make sure you know :

- which words it is usually associated with = write down the words that commonly go together (=collocations) : Adj+N = rich vocabulary , common sense V+N = to express an opinion, to take sides - its grammatical characteristics : irr.V / V+ postposition or preposition uncountable noun = luggage +V sg / Noun always used in the plural= clothes words + prep = at a loss for words, thanks to you - how it is pronounced : learn to recognise the phonetic symbols of vowel sounds and a few tricky consonant sounds (cf inside cover Meeting Point 1ere ) - how to use the methods explained in your text book p 240-241 (antonyms/synonyms/mind maps) - how to find the root , the prefix or suffix : careless vs careful, misunderstanding - whether it is formal, neutral, informal or vulgar ( its register) : ass, bottom, backside, buttocks are the same body part but are used quite differently ! Ex 1: What particular grammatical note would you make for these words ? a) trousers b) teach c) weather d) advice Ex2 : Check the pronunciation : a) subtle b) photo/photograph/photographer c) lead (plomb) or lead (mener) ?
