The Fitz Family

Reading
We have read several books this week to remind us of school procedures, rules, and being a good person/friend. Next week we will jump into our regular routine. We have two reading/language arts time periods. The first period is for whole group instruction. During this time period, we learn and pull ideas from our focus story (vocabulary, writing prompts, & comprehension strategies). All students take part and can learn from reading the focus story, regardless of reading abilities. During the second time period, students explore language arts through Daily 5 Stations (read to self, read to someone, work on writing, word work, and listen to reading). During this time, students read books at their independent reading level. I will pull a small group of students to read with me at their instructional level (a book that is slightly too hard; but with a little support, students can succeed).

Mathematics
Family letters came home Friday about our first math unit. You might wonder, What is a math mountain? A math mountain is simply 3 numbers in an addition or subtraction equation. The numbers are displayed in a triangle or mountain picture, with the biggest number always on top (this is not always the answer due to subtraction). Here is an example:

Total on Top! (biggest number) Addends Equations made from the mountain
