The intern students will work on a small research project aiming to investigate the effects of formal genocide education (that Cambodian high school students receive in school) and informal education (that they receive from their parents at home via storytelling) on their academic aspirations and achievement. In other words, the interns will examine how Cambodian students school performance and aspirations are affected by their understanding of the history of genocide received from both of these informal and formal sources of education. Students will also engage in archival work to support the daily activities of the Documentation Center.

Teaching Practicum and Cultural Immersion Program in China

(Funded by The Freeman Foundation)

Seeking candidates for a 6-week (May 5 - June 15) program that provides students with an international immersion experience in which they will gain practical TESOL teaching experience abroad while being immersed in the Chinese language and culture. APPLY DIRECTLY THROUGH THE ESL DEPARTMENT! Program Objectives: Provide a teaching practicum experience specifically tailored to upper-class undergraduates with an interest in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) abroad or English as a Second Language (ESL) in the K-12 or higher education setting within the US after graduation. Allow students to apply the teaching methods and principles that they learn in ENGL 310 (Methods of Teaching ESL/EFL) within an actual EFL classroom in collaboration with experienced cooperating Chinese TESOL teachers in order to better understand the challenges and teaching approaches of the EFL language classroom. Allow students to gain a profound understanding of a different culture and language and allow them to develop a better sense of cross-cultural communication with a culture that is quite different from, but increasingly important to, the US culture. Provide an international language and cultural immersion experience to domestic students who may not have the time to participate in a traditional Study Abroad experience during the fall and spring semesters. An additional option/objective for students who will teach English in the US or abroad is that some upperclassmen will be recommended to the TESOL Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Lehighs College of Education. This is an optional program and costs incurred from these additional credits fall outside of the funding from this grant.

Continuation of Program Above Teaching Practicum and Cultural Immersion Program in China
(Funded by The Freeman Foundation)

Student Experience: The students will be observing college English classes and then teaching/tutoring English to Chinese university undergraduate students within the classroom at ECUST, one of the top higher education institutions in China. Each student will be assigned a personal cooperating Chinese TESOL faculty member, who will guide their assigned student in the best practices of teaching English to foreign students. In addition, the students will receive immersion classes in Chinese speaking and culture, live in the campus dormitory, and take cultural trips guided by the Chinese students and faculty allowing for a full-immersion experience for the duration of the program. The benefit to the partner institution in China will be that native speakers of American English will be teaching/tutoring English to their Chinese students for this period.

Ideal Candidate: Major/Discipline: Students who have been enrolled in the undergraduate TESOL classes (ENGL 310 and ENGL 314) in the past have mainly come the College of Arts and Sciences, but there have also been students in these TESOL classes from CBE and RCEAS. However, Lehigh undergraduate students who are interested in TESOL predominantly come from the College of Arts and Sciences. For example, the students who attended the TESOL Teaching Practicum and Immersion Program in May 2012 came from the following CAS majors: Mathematics, Modern Languages, and English. Year of Study: Preferably rising juniors and rising seniors, but other students may be considered if qualifications are met.

Service and Sustainable Development Internship in Costa Rica (Funded by The Lee Iacocca Foundation)
Seeking 10 candidates for a 7-week (July 1st August 21th) program where students will be gaining experience with program development and evaluation, research and teaching.
Program Objectives: The goal of this project is to augment the classroom education currently available to students in environmental science or environmental studies with practical on-the-ground experience in sustainable development projects. Students will hold internships with Costa Rican development and conservation NGOs that conduct projects related to the protection of the natural environment. The sustainability of that environment is crucial to the ecotourism strategy of sustainable development for which Costa Rica is well known.

Student Experience: Interns will begin the program on the Lehigh campus by participating in a series of modular boot camp courses that will be conducted during the preceding spring semester. After arriving in Costa Rica, students will spend approximately 5 weeks in internships with NGOs focused on various aspects of forest conservation related to sustainable development. The specific internship(s) will be selected for each student according to their particular interests and their Spanish language proficiency (some will require a high level of fluency while others may not). While the mission statements are slightly different for each of our host NGOs, all students will be involved in some aspect of reforestation, which is critical to preserving biodiversity in this region. They will also be involved in ecological research to evaluate the extent of existing forest fragmentation as well as evaluating the success of past reforestation efforts. The last 2 weeks of the internship program will be conducted at the University of Georgias Costa Rica campus in San Luis. In this element of the program, students will work collectively and specifically on the study and establishment of the Pjaro Campana Biological Corridor (this experience overlaps with a 12-day Environmental Community Service Project being conducted by another population of Lehigh students).

Ideal Candidate: We are seeking a group of approximately 7 upper-class students with disciplinary backgrounds in environmental sciences or environmental studies. A secondary target group is students with a disciplinary background in Latin American Studies, International Development, Policy, Spanish, or Environmental Engineering who have also taken some coursework in environmental sciences or environmental studies. Major/Discipline Desired: This program is striving for diversity in genders, colleges, majors, religious beliefs, and financial need etc. The more diverse the student group, the more enriching the experience for all involved.
