Nu Chapter Minutes Alpha State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International September 17, 2013 Chapel in the Hills,

Wimberley, Texas Nu Chapter of Alpha State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met on Tuesday, September 17, at 6:00 p.m. at Chapel in the Hills, Wimberley Texas for a regularly scheduled meeting. Members enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by our Wimberley members. Call to Order President Barbara Pevoto called the meeting to order at 6:45 p.m. with twenty members present.

Approval of Minutes Approved Minutes from May 21, 2013 meeting as printed.

Approval of Treasurers Report Approved Nu Chapter Treasurer Tonda Fradys report with a balance of $1,362.57 as of September 17, 2013. Tonda thanked Carol Grimm for her commitment of making the beautiful crocheted necklaces and manning the booth at the Alpha State Convention in Austin. Tonda also gave a thank you to the others who helped Carol crocheted the necklaces. Tonda reported $496.00 in income for the Nu Scholarship fund from the sale of the necklaces.

2013-14 Proposed Budget Approval Tonda presented the 2013-14 Nu budget. (attached) Laurie Kirkscey stated she is now putting the Nu Chapter Yearbooks online and would not need a budget of $250 for that expense because the printing was donated for the members who do not have online access to the yearbook. Laurie recommended the line item of $250 be taken out of the budget. The motion by Laverne Rydell and second by Henrietta Smith to accept the 2013-14 Nu budget as amended passed. Tonda will be accepting dues of $83.00 for this 2013-14 year. They must be in by November 1, 2013. Tonda will contact Margie Harmon to conduct the Nu Audit.

Corresponding Secretary Report Corresponding Secretary, Henrietta Smith, shared a thank you note from member, Sandra Morales, Co-Chair of the Alpha State 2013 Convention in Austin, Texas, thanking her Nu sisters for their help and support before, during and after the Alpha State Convention. Committee Reports Membership Chair Report o Evelyn Barrett reported Alpha State wants to see Chapter growth. o Alpha State suggested calling former members to invite back to the chapter. o Evelyn called the list provided and got three yes responses but they didnt come because of health reasons. o Evelyn requested assistance from our members to call and personally invite former members back to chapter. o Evelyn stated that the dues expense and a change in interests were the main reasons given for not returning to Nu Chapter. o Nu Membership Chair, Evelyn Barrett, and her committee will make their contacts and report their findings to President Pevoto. President Pevoto will then complete the Nu membership report and return it to the Alpha State membership chair. o Sandra Morales stated that Eta Tau was no longer meeting and some of those members might have interest in joining Nu Chapter.

Program Report Sandra Morales reported Nus October program will host Dr. Lori Assaf, Professor in the College of Education at Texas State University, who will discuss the reading program she has implemented in South Africa. Sandra encouraged members to bring guests to this meeting. Taonga Chirwa, a Delta Kappa Gamma World Fellowship recipient from Zambia, has been invited to join us for our meeting. Ms. Chirwa is working on her graduate degree in nutrition at Texas State University. Nadyne Gartman shared that her daughter Melynda Caudle and granddaughter Melissa Caudle will be presenting the February Nu Program on Social Media. She also encouraged members to bring guests to this informative meeting.

Scrapbook Committee Susan Pulis volunteered to produce the Nu Chapter scrapbook digitally if members would get information to her for the scrapbook. Cheryl Blake made a motion to produce the Nu Chapter scrapbook digitally. After a second by Mary Nabers and discussion the motion passed. Sandra Morales stressed the importance of a scrapbook so that members may go back to look up events in the Nu Chapters history.

New Business President Barbara Pevoto presented two Nu Achievement Award Certificates to Nu members. o Sandra Morales was presented a Certificate for her hard work as Co-Chair of the Alpha State Convention. o Carol Grimm was presented a Certificate for her work on behalf of the scholarship fund.

Program Master Gardener and Nu member Mary Nabers gave an informative program, Firewise Landscaping in Texas. Handouts and information were provided by the Texas Forest Service as a part of Texas A & M University. o Mary stressed the need for moving vegetation at least three feet from the foundation of your home and deck areas. o She said that you should have a 30 foot defensible space around your home that is free of ladder fuels that allow fires to climb from lower to higher vegetation. o She shared information about how to prepare ahead for fires and the importance of using fire resistant materials for home repairs. o At the end of the program members sang a song, Aint She Smart!, with original lyrics by Nu member and Music chair, Sandra Morales as a thanks and a reminder to be Firewise.

Announcements Nadyne Gartman reported that there were 603 Delta Kappa Gamma members in attendance at the Southwest Region Conference held in Branson, Missouri. She said she was pleased to note that around 235 were first time attendees. Nu member Sandra Morales attended the meeting with Gartman. Nadyne brought back a packet of program ideas that were shared by DKG International at the Conference. Nadyne passed those along to program chair Cheryl Blake. President Pevoto asked everyone to keep member Carol Fowler in their thoughts and prayers. Carol is having surgery this week. Joan Winters and Tonda Frady won the Nu Chapter meeting door pizes. Sandra Morales presented each member with a rose candle and a Capital Experience magnet as a thank you gift for helping at the Alpha State Convention.

Adjournment President Pevoto announced that the next Nu meeting would be held on October 15, 2013 at The First Christian Church, San Marcos, Texas. After Nu Chapter sang the Delta Kappa Gamma Song, accompanied by the new CD of Delta Kappa Gamma music, President Pevoto adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m.
