Reading: This week, we began Unit 2: Outside Our Door. We discussed wild animal families! Did you know that Daddy penguins hold the baby penguin egg on their feet for two weeks while the Mom goes off to find food?! We added the words: one, two, does, her & they to our first grade sight word list! This week we also discussed the short /o/ sound like in the words: hog, not, top. In addition we discussed what nouns are and added the inflectional ending ed to a lot of words. Examples- work becomes worked Math: We are still in Topic 3 this week. We are using a ten frame to show how to make 5 and 10. Science: In science this week we are discussing the sun. The sun is a big ball of gas. It provides heat and light to our Earth. This week we created our own shadow shapes and conducted an experiment called Sun vs. Crayon. We set a white crayon and black crayon outside for the day to see which would melt faster! Ask your scholar about their findings! Social Studies: This week we have been talking about the difference between fact and fiction. Stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Aladdin are fiction, but stories of real events/people like MLK and Lincoln are facts! Health: In health this week we have been talking about healthy teeth!! We must always remember to brush and floss!! We completed two super fun activities this week! We wrote about the importance of flossing and we even used apples, peanut butter and marshmallows to make a mouth!!
