Miss Philippines Megan Young crowned Miss World 2013
Megan Young from Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013 by last year's winner Wenxia Yu from The
Peoples Republic of China on 28
th
September 2013 in Bali, Indonesia. The new Miss World will spend the
next year travelling to represent the Miss World Organization and help raise money for its charitable
causes.
India's contender Navneet Kaur Dhillon failed to make it in the top 20 list. However, she won "Miss
Multimedia Award 2013" and finished ninth among the top 10 finalists of "Beauty with a Purpose
award".
India gets first woman Anglican bishop from Andhra
The Church of South India appointed its first woman Bishop, who hails from a small village in Kurnool.
With her appointment Rev E Pushpalalitha becomes the first woman bishop of the Anglican family
churches in South Asia. The Church of South India (CSI) created history by appointing a woman Bishop
after the Church of Ireland elected its first woman Bishop Rev Patricia a few days back.
Malala Yousafzai Presented with Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award by Harvard University
Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani schoolgirl and education rights campaigner. She was shot in the head by a
Taliban militant in October 2012 after she campaigned for girls' right to education, presented with the
2013 Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award (Harvard Humanitarian of the year) by Harvard University on

Narikuravas granted Scheduled Tribes status
The Centre has taken a favourable decision on the demand for enlisting Narikuravas, a nomadic
community living in Tamil Nadu, in the Scheduled Tribes list.
World rabies day being observed on 28th September
World Rabies Day observed each year on September 28, on the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur who
developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine with his colleagues. The theme this year is Rabies:
Understand it to defeat it. The day aims to raise awareness about the impact of rabies on human beings
and animals, and provide information on how to prevent the disease.
Nation remembers Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 106th birth anniversary
The Nation is celebrating the 106th birth anniversary of the great son of the soil, Shaheed-e-Azam
Bhagat Singh on 28
th
September. He was born to Sardar Kishan Singh and Vidyavati ji on this day in 1907.

name by playing an unforgetable role in the countrys freedom struggle. He is not amongst us today but
his memories along with his slogan - 'Inquilab Zindabad' will always remain alive.
U.S. offers Global Entry to Indians
The U.S. offer to open talks to extend its Global Entry programme to Indian citizens. Under the
programme, frequent travellers from approved countries must fill up an online application, pay a $100
fee, undergo a background check and interview and submit fingerprints. The membership is valid for five
years. The programme facilitates quick entry to them and reduces immigration hassles. It began with a
pilot project in 2008. The Global Entry partnerships are now in place with select countries, including the
U.K., Germany, South Korea and Qatar. Some of these countries have also offered U.S. citizens a similar
programme.
India-US Joint Declaration on Defence Cooperation
India-United States defence cooperation and engagement has increased significantly over the past
decade, in step with the overall deepening of India-US relations. We continue to work towards achieving
the full vision of expanded defence cooperation set forth in the 2005 New Framework Agreement. The
United States and India share common security interests and place each other at the same level as their
closest partners. The U.S and India are also committed to protecting each others sensitive technology
and information. The U.S. continues to fully support India`s full membership in the four international
export control regimes, which would further facilitate technology sharing.
Guinea went first national polls in a decade
Guineans went to the polls on 28th September 2013 in the first parliamentary elections for more than a
decade. Voters had a choice of more than 1,700 candidates vying for 114 seats in a national assembly
which will replace the transitional Parliament running the country since 2010. One of the poorest
countries in the region despite vast potential for mineral exploitation, Guinea was run by a succession of
autocratic rulers after gaining independence from France in 1958.
