. Peaflorida Topic: SETS: AN INTRODUCTION Traditional Way of Teaching: 1. The teacher will define SETS as a well-defined group of objects, called elements that share a common characteristic. 2. The teacher will illustrate examples of sets to the students. 3. The teacher will introduced mathematical symbols involving set notations. 4. Students will be asked answer sets of questions regarding the discussion. Misconceptions: 1. A set should always contain at least one element. Constructivist Approach: The teacher will present an activity that will lead to the definition of sets. Below are some objects. Group them as you see fit and label each group. Answer the following questions: a. How many groups are there? b. Does each object belong to a group? c. Is there an object that belongs to more than one group? Which one?

Let us answer the questions posed in the opening activity. 1. How many sets are there? There is the set of head covers (hats), the set of trees, the set of even numbers, and the set of polyhedra. But, there is also a set ofround objects and a set of pointy objects. There are 6 welldefined sets. 2. Does each object belong to a set? Yes. 3. Is there an object that belongs to more than one set? Which ones? All the hats belong to the set of round objects. The pine trees and two of the polyhedra belong to the set of pointy objects.
