Deborah Klein

Deborah Klein was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1951. She makes prints and paintings and has lived most of her childhood years in St. Kilda until she moved to live in London from 1973 to 1980. When she returned to Melbourne, she studied at Monash University in Gippsland, Victoria from 1995-1997 and completed a Master of Arts degree by research. She also went to Chisholm Institute of Technology for 2 years from 1982 to 1984 and received a Bachelor of Fine Art for Printmaking. She then attended Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1987 to 1988 and received a Graduate Diploma. She was a University Lecturer for Drawing (1987-1988) and Printmaking (1995-1997) both at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Victoria. During her career, she has received many awards such as the Australian Printmedia Award two years in a row in 1996 and 1997. The Geelong Acquisitive Print Prize and the Grand Prize for the Silk Cut Award for Linocut Printmaking both in 1997. The Jacaranda Drawing Prize in 1996 and 1998. The Rena Ellen Jones Memorial Print Award three years in a row from 1997 to 1999. And Finally Fleming Muntz Albury Art Prize in 2002. Kleins work has been held in many public, university and private collection including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Bendigo Art Gallery, Victoria and Baillieu Library Print Collection, University of Melbourne. Deborah Klein specialises in painting and printmaking. Many of her pieces of artworks have heavy line-art and often features hair and differently styled butterflies. She is also very fond of using womens silhouettes. As well as that, she has also published a few books and many zines under the publication of Moth Woman Press.
