Ice lab

Tyler Quick

Purpose: To determine if ice melts faster in fresh water or salt water.

Hypothesis: If ice is in salt water, then the ice will melt faster.

Procedure: Find partner or group gather supplies fill two glasses with one cup of water add a tablespoon of salt to one cup start stopwatch put ice in waters observe

Supplies: Salt water, solid and liquid timer 2 cups (same size) measuring cup scale stirring utensil thermometer

Data:

Temp. Water Salt 20.3c 19.6c

Mass 191.3g 208.7g

Time 2:18:6 8:55:4

Independent variable: Salt

Dependent Variable: Ice melting

Other controlled variables: Cups Water controlled water

Experimental group Salt water

Control group: Normal water

Conclusion: In this experiment i wanted to observe if salt water slowed or quickened the melting process. I believed that ice would melt faster in salt water. In this experiment i found that if you added salt to the water it actually slows the melting process, my hypothesis was wrong. I don't have any prior knowledge and do not know of any known knowledge of salt, i would believe that it would support previous data. if i could redo this experiment i would be a little more precise of the temperatures and weights.
