Chapter no 8 (Thermal properties of matter) Short Answers Answer (8.2) Heat energy of the hot body is higher than cold one so when they are in thermal contact heat flow from hot body to cold body to attain thermal equillibrium. Answer(8.3) The degree of hotness or coldness of the body is termed as temperature. And Heat is the form of energy that is transfer from one body to another due to difference of temperature when they are in thermal contact. Answer(8.4) The sum of kinetic energy and potential energy associated with the atoms, molecules and particles of the body is called its internal energy. Answer(8.5) By heating the gass molecules the kinetic energy of the molecules increases so their motion is increased due to which volume is increased. Answer(8.6) A device that is used to measure the temerature of the body is called as thermometer. Mercury freezes at -39C0 and boiles at 357C0,it has all the thermometric properties so it is preffered as the thermometric substance. Answer(8.7) Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature.Usually all the elements show increase in their volume with increase in temperature.

Answer(8.8) Specific heat is the amount of heat required to raise temperature of 1Kg mass of the substance through 1Kelvin. By using the relation

We can find the specific heat of the object. Answer(8.9) Heat energy required to change unit mass of a substance from solid to liquid state at its melting point without in its temperature is called as latent heat of fusion. It is denoted by Hf Hf=Qf/m Answer(8.10) The quantity of heat that changes unit mass of liquid completly into gass at its boiling point without any change in temperature is called as latent heat of vapourizaion.it is denoted by Hv. Hv=Qv/m Answer(8.11) Evaporation is the changing of the liquid in to vapours from the surface of liquid without heating it. Evaporation depends upon the temperature , surface area, amount of wind, and the nature of liquid. During evaporation fast moving molecules escape out from the surface leaving behind the low kinetic energy molecules so temperature of the substance falls that cause cooling.
