Define the following terms:

1. Energy

is the capacity for doing work.

2. Work

a change in volume against a pressure.

3. Kinetic energy

is energy possessed by an object in motion.

4. Potential energy

stored energy that depends upon the relative position of various parts of a system.

5. Heat energy

is the result of the movement of tiny particles called atoms, molecules or ions in solids, liquids
and gases.

6. Exothermic change

a chemical change that gives out heat.

7. Endothermic change

if heat is absorbed by the system from the surroundings.

8. Heat capacity

is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of a given amount of matter by 1°C.

9. Specific heat

the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one
Celsius degree.

10. Calorimetry

is the process of measuring the amount of heat released or absorbed during a chemical
reaction.

11. Heats of reaction

is the change in the enthalpy of a chemical reaction that occurs at a constant pressure.

12. Enthalpy

(H) is the sum of the internal energy (U) and the product of pressure and volume (PV).

13. Thermodynamics

is the study of the relations between heat, work, temperature, and energy.

14. System

is the set of substances and energy that is being studied.

15. Surroundings

are everything around the reaction

16. First Law of Thermodynamics – Law of Conservation of Energy
