ETME 4244 Heat Transfer Fall 2013 HW #3 1.

A thick-walled hollow pipe has an inner diameter of 2 cm and an outer diameter of 4 cm. The length of the pipe is very large compared to the diameter so it may be assumed that the heat flows in the radial direction only. The temperature at the inner pipe surface is 120 C and on the outer pipe surface is 110 C. Heat transfers at the rate of 906 W/m through the pipe wall. a. List at least three assumptions associated with heat transfer concepts that are germane to this problem. (In other words, diameter is assumed constant is not a valid response.) b. What is the pipe material? 2. Air traveling at 50 m/s and a temperature of 30 C is forced across a cylinder that measures 5 cm in diameter. The cylinder, which has an emissivity of 0.7, is heated to 200 C. a. Determine the heat loss per unit length in W/m if the walls of the enclosing room are at 10 C. Hint! Refer to Table 1-3 in your text. b. Comment on the results of your calculation. What can you infer about the heat transfer? 3. Liquid water flows through a tube. A constant heat flux is imposed on the tube wall so that the wall temperature is 40 C higher than the temperature of the water flowing through it. The mass flow rate of the water is 0.5 kg/s and the diameter and length of the tube are 2.5 cm and 3 m, respectively. a. What is the rate of heat transfer in W? Hint! Refer to Table 1-3 in your text. b. What is the temperature rise of the liquid water? Hint! Think back to Thermo. Ans. 15.78 C.
