Problems.
1.Air at 20oC and a pressure of 1 bar is flowing over a flat
plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. If the plate is 280 mm wide
and at 56oC, Calculate the following quantities at x=280
mm.
Flat plate problem.

2. Air at atmospheric pressure and 200oC flows over a

plate with a velocity of 5 m/s. The plate is 15 mm wide and
is maintained at a temperature of 120oC. Calculate the
thickness of hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers
and the local heat transfer coefficient at a distance of 0.5
m from the leading edge. Assume that flow is on one side
of the plate.
Exercise Problem

3. In a certain glass making process, a square plate of glass 1m2 area and 3
mm thick heated uniformly to 90oC is cooled by air at 20oC flowing over
both sides parallel to the plate at 2 m/s. Calculate the initial rate of cooling
the plate. Neglect the temperature gradient in the glass plate and consider
only forced convection. Take for glass ρ =1.076 kg/m3, Cp=1.008 kJ/kg K,
k=0.0286 W/moC, μ=19.8x10-6 N-s/m2

4. The local atmospheric pressure in Al Jabel akthar, Al Dakhilia (elevation

1610 m), is 83.4 kPa. Air at this pressure and 20°C flows with a velocity of 8
m/s over a 1.5 m 6 m flat plate whose temperature is 140°C . Determine the
rate of heat transfer from the plate if the air flows parallel to the (a) 6-m-
long side and (b) the 1.5-m side.
Internal laminar and turbulent flow.
1. When 0.5 kg of water per minute is passed through a tube of 20 mm
diameter, it is found to be heated from 20oC to 50oC. The heating is
accomplished by condensing steam on the surface of the tube and
subsequently the surface temperature of the tube is maintained at 85oC.
Determine the length of the tube required for fully developed flow. Take
water at 60oC as:
ρ =983.2 kg/m3, Cp=4.178 kJ/kg K, k=0.659 W/moC, ν=0.478x10-6 m2/s

2. Liquid sodium is to be heated from 125oC to 144oC at a rate of 2.25 kg/s

in a 25 mm diameter electrically heated tube ( constant heat flux). Calculate
the minimum length of the tube if its wall temperature is not to exceed
195oC.

3. A tube 5 m long is maintained at 100oC by steam jacketing. A fluid flows

through the tube at the rate of 2940 kg/h at 30oC.The diameter of the tube
is 2 cm. Find out average heat transfer coefficient. Take the following
properties of the fluid: ρ =850 kg/m3, Cp=2 kJ/kg K, k=0.12 W/moC,
ν=5.1x10-6 m2/s
