Q1..Water at 10°C is to be heated to 40°C in a tube of 2 cm diameter. The outside of tube is


wrapped with an electric heating element that produces a uniform flux of 200W/m3 over the
surface and the mass flow rate is 0.2 Kg/s. find Length of the pipe.The relevant properties of
water at 25°C are given below = 997 Kg/m3, Cp= 4180 J/Kg K,K= 0.608 W/mK, μ= 910X10-6
poise
ANSWER: h=1202 W/m2K , L= 1.996 m
Q2.. Air at 20°C is flowing along a flat plate maintained at 134°C with a velocity of 3 m/s. The
plate is 2m long and 1.5 m wide. Calculate the local heat transfer coefficient at 40 cm from the
leading edge of the plate. Also determine the heat transferred from the first 40 cm of the plate to
air. For air (at 77 °C) take the following property data:ρ = 0.998 Kg/m 3, Pr= 0.697, Cp= 1009
KJ/Kg K ,v= 20.76X10-6 m2/s, K= 0.03 W/mK.
ANSWER: hx=5.3 W/m2K Q=725.04 W

Q.3.. Air at 34°C is flowing over a flat plate maintained at 120°C with a free stream velocity of 5m/s.
The plate is 10m long and 1 m wide. Calculate the local heat transfer at 0.5m and 5m from the
leading edge of the plate. Also determine the heat transferred from the first 50 cm of the plate to
air. For air take Pr= 0.697, v= 20.76X10-6 m2/s, K= 0.03 W/mK.
ANSWER: hx=11.496W/m2K ….., hx=0.0612 W/m2K : Qt=5.263W
Q.4. Water at 40 °C with a flow rate of 1Kg/s is heated in a tube to 60°C. Surface of the tube is
maintained at 100°C. Find the length if the diameter of the tube is 25m. For water (at 50°C): C p=
4.81 J/Kg.K, μ= 5.48 X 10-4 Kg/ms, K= 0.643 W/mK, Pr=3.56.
For water (at 100°C): μ= 2.79X10-4 Kg/ms.
ANSWER: h=9.3 E05 W/m2K ,L2.322 m
Q5.Show that in free convection, the momentum equation can be modified to-
u. ∂u/∂x +v. ∂v/∂y=g β(T-T∞)+µ.∂2u/∂y2
Q.6. Find the heat lost by a human body by convection to surrounding air. The body can be
approximated to a vertical cylinder of 25 cm in diameter and 175 cm in height. The air is at 13°C
and body is at 37°C.
ANSWER: h=4.45 W/m2K

Q.7.In a long annulus (3.5 cm ID and 5 cm OD), the water is heated by maintaining the outer surface
of inner tube at 60oC. The water enters at 20oC and leave 34oC. While its flow rate is 2 m/s.
Estimate the heat transfer coefficient.
Q.8. Thin flat plate 15 cm square is suspended from a balance in a uniformly flowing stream oil in
such a way that the oil flows parallel to and along both surfaces of the plate and is measured
and found to be 55.5N .If the oil flows at the rate of 15m/s with a temp. of 45˚C, calculate heat
transfer coefficient using the Reynolds analogy
Q.9 . Fluid enters a tube with a flow rate of 0.015 kg/s and an inlet temperature of 200C. The tube,
which has a length of 6 m and diameter of 15 mm, has a surface temperature of 300C.
Determine the heat transfer rate to the fluid if it is water.
Q10. . Air at atmospheric pressure and 200°Cflows over a plate with a velocity of 5m/s. The plate is
15mm wide and is maintained at a temperature of 120°C. Calculate the thickness of
hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers and the heat transfer coefficients at the distance of
0.5 m from the leading edge. Assume that flow is on one side of the plate.
