Caruso English 1101 7 November 2013 Rhetorical Analysis Paper Advertisements are a part of our daily life. We see them on television, on the internet, in magazines, and we even hear them on the radio. While everyone experiences advertisements, how we interpret them is very different. An advertisement can come off in a variety of ways depending on who the viewer is at that moment. There is an advertisement for just about any product you can imagine. Sometimes when we see advertisements we dont question the content, we just accept it and move on. However, there are many occurrences where an advertisement catches your eye and stops you from flipping to the next page or channel. In the ad for Gain dish detergent, the woman in the center is the one that keeps you from turning to the next page in the magazine. She draws you in by the excitement on her face and her brightly colored dress that does not seem to be of this decade. Her facial expression is contradictory of the task she is performing. What woman is ever happy washing dishes after dinner? The next thing noticed would be the bright color pallet used in the kitchen background. It doesnt look like the typical American kitchen. The bright colors add to the overall excitement and energy that is surrounding the cleaning of the dishes. This color choice is invoking a positive reaction to the idea of something that is usually unpleasant. Bright colors were also used in the Palmolive advertisement to give a positive connotation and use to the detergent.
Commented [AD3]: Add detail, dont just hint at it and then move on Commented [AD2]: Add variation to your sentence lengths. Seems short and choppy when every sentence is short Commented [AD1]: I like your introduction. It introduces your topic well and lets me know where you are going with the paper

Quigley 2 As you begin to peer closer into the advertisement you notice that the woman is surrounded by her husband, daughter, and young son. Usually a husband is nowhere to be found after dinner except in front of the television. In this Gain advertisement, he is assisting his wife by putting the clean dishes away. He appears to be dancing and having a great time. This image is one that can make men consider helping after dinner. The husband in the ad suggests that it cleaning can be a fun time and not just feminine. Along with the husband is the daughter in the back right corner. She can be seen roller skating and joining in the dance party in the kitchen. She adds an essence of chaos to the whole advertisement. Children can view this as an invitation to rollerblade or do other outdoor activities in the house. They can also be drawn to help in the kitchen after dinner because the advertisement makes it look like a party. The last character in the scene is the young son who is still sitting in a high chair. Most babies do not have much hair but this young boy has an afro. This hair style gives another clue that this ad is taking place in another decade. Instead of the baby being fussy and crying, he looks to be laughing and enjoying the spectacle occurring in the kitchen.
Commented [AD4]: Wrap it all up and bring the paragraph together. Connect the beginning to the end. Tell how each one of these related to each other such as, the way they family is acting makes it seem like dish washing can be funect
