Unit: Parachute

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Lesson 1 of 1

Objectives: Psychomotor: Student will lift the parachute by raising handles overhead, pull the parachute by bringing the handles to the ground, shake the parachute by moving handles side to side, and move with the parachute by running, skipping, jumping, etc. with one handle in hand. Cognitive: Student will describe how moving the parachute with more or less force affected the flight of objects placed on it. Affective: Student will participate in parachute activities safely by following the teachers directions. Teacher: Teacher will deliver clear concise teaching cues and directions for all parachute and transition activities. Equipment: one large parachute, 20-30 foam balls, 6 hula hoops, 3-4 jump ropes, one beach ball Protocols: When I say Freeze, stop what you are doing and put your eyes and ears on me. Keep two hands on the parachute at all times unless I tell you otherwise. At no time today should you EVER be on top of the parachute. Set Induction: Has anyone ever seen a hot air balloon very high up in the sky? How about a parachute? Mr. Hoover has a very large parachute that we are going to play with today! There are a lot of fun activities we can do with the parachute, and we can even use it to help make our muscles big and strong! Are you ready to play? Instant Activity: PopCorn- Parachute will be laid in the center of the gym. When instructor says Go, students will each hustle to grab a color or hand le(s) on the parachute. Today we are going to make popcorn! Our microwave is broken so well have to pop the kernels in this big frying pan. First things first, we need to put some butter in the pan. Help me roll the butter to all sides of the pan (toss a beach ball onto the parachute and instruct students to raise and lower their handles to roll, not bounce the ball around the parachute). Now that the pan is getting hot, were read y to add the kernels (toss a few foam balls onto the parachute)! Shake your handles very fast to get the kernels popping! Should we add more popcorn? Now the pan is very hot and the kernels are really popping! Can you get the popcorn to hit the ceiling (instruct students to raise their handles as high as they can they pull down hard when you say so)? Now that the kernels are all popped we can let the pan cool down (Have students shake handles fast then gradually slow down). Lower the frying pan to the ground and when I say so, hustle to put all the popcorn into a bowl (hula hoop) located along the walls and come back to your parachute handles.
LESSON CONTENT & PROGRESSIONS Introduction, skills task analysis, activity/games Teaching Cues The cues are short quotes of what you are saying to students to remind them of proper form. MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES Organization of space, equipment, students (diagrams of practice formations, equipment set up, and game situations ), including method for assigning students to groups Safety Procedures Checking field, equipment, and facilities for debris, damage, etc. What safety procedures will you take to make sure ALL students are safe in your class.

Swamp Snakes Now we are going to go on a boat trip through a swamp. Lets all sit in our boat and start rowing (students are

sitting, holding the handles at their waists). Some students are pulling until they are lying flat on their backs as others are performing a sit up- there should be a rowing motion around the parachute. Have students row faster and slower as you go deeper into the swampy waters. Everyone stand up, now we are deep in the swamp but oh no! There are poisonous snakes everywhere (throw a few jump ropes onto the parachute)! Move and shake your handles to keep the snakes from biting you! ITV: Can we get all the snakes to the middle? Can we get all the snakes on just one color of the parachute? Use more/less jump ropes. Sharks and Minnows Have the students seated with the parachute at their waists. Select a few students to be sharks and send them under the parachute, the rest of the students are minnows. Minnows will make small and large waves on the teachers cue while sharks crawl around underneath the parachute. Sharks will try to sneak up to a minnow and grab their shoe or ankle. Do NOT pull feet and legs. When a minnows ankle is grabbed, they will trade places with the shark that grabbed them. Make sure each student has a chance to be a shark. ITV: More/less sharks. Have minnows standing.

necessary. Sit up Two hands at all times unless otherwise stated during Volcano Adventure Dont get bit!

Make sure students are not shaking the parachute out of control. Might need to use pool noodle instead of jump rope.

Make sure students are not pulling others under by the foot or ankle-this could cause a student to hit the back of their head. Enforce that sharks only touch or grab feet or ankles.

Pull up Pull down Dont pull minnows! Parachute Hula Hoop

No one is to be on top of the parachute while someone is underneath it at any time.

Make sure all students are using controlled movements.

Volcano Adventure Now we are going to go on an adventure to explore a very large volcano! The volcano is on an island so first thing we need to do is climb into our row boat. Row boat, slow and fast. There are a lot of waves in this ocean! Make small and large waves. Look at all the beautiful fish below! Call students by color of the parachute to trade places with someone who has their same color. We finally made it to the island. Lets stand up and build a large tent before the wind and rain come! Lift up/pull down parachute to make a tent. Sway back and forth for wind, shake parachute for rain. We made it through the storm! Time to go to sleep. Lay down and pull the parachute to your neck like a sleeping bag. Time to wake up! Lets stretch. Start with the handles on the ground, lift up, stretch left/right, bring handles to waist. Now we are ready to hike up the path to the volcano. Grab one handle with one hand. Everyone moves in the same direction, teacher calls for different locomotor movements. Weve reached the top of the volcano! Who knows what happens to volcanos when they become very hot (They erupt/explode!)? Toss foam balls onto the parachute. Make big waves to show the erupting volcano!

Remind students to travel safely while crossing paths under the parachute.

Pull up Pull down Shake left/right

Lift high Pull low Lean left/right

Stretch left/right Skip, jump, gallop, etc. Must have a hand on the parachute while using different locomotor movements.

Make sure students are not moving so fast that others cannot keep up.

Oh no! The lava is getting way too hot and we need to get off this island! Hurry back down the path (call out different locomotor movements)! Back to the boat! Row the boat quickly off the island. Look, at all the fish again! Call students by parachute color to crawl under. We made it. What an adventure! ITV: Change levels, change intensity of pulling/lifting handles. TBI: Choose what color to start at (may need to rotate colors every so often), choose locomotor movement

Do not make wind (small waves) while students are climbing unless they are able to climb safely.

With Additional Time: Floating Balloon Pump up the balloon 5 times by raising all the up and pulling all the way down. On the fifth time up, everyone lets go simultaneously to let the parachute float briefly in the air. Closure: How many different ways were we able to move the parachute today? Can you describe what we did? (small waves, big waves, rowed, lifted high, pulled low, etc.) Have the class demonstrate each method of using the parachute as they list and describe them. You all did such a great job using the parachute today and you were even able to use your arms enough to get a fun workout in! Awesome work Kindergarten, I hope you had as much fun as I did! Standards: National- 1, 4, 5 PA- 10.4.3.AF, 10.5.3.AE
