DETT 611: Library and Intellectual Property Issues in Distance Education and E-Learning

What I knew about the course prior to taking it: Entering this class I had no understanding of intellectual design, I surly knew how to utilize library services though. I Googled the term Intellectual Property and learned that the concept dealt with course/paper/presentation ownership.

What I learned from the course: -How to research which copyright law will apply to a document I am working on. -Fair Use: This concept I presently use with every lecture and presentation I create for either the University of Maryland School of Dentistry or Carroll Community College. -Information Literacy: This was presented in a very interesting way. The instructor made us draw on our earlier years and dig deep to see when and how we learned this skill. The concept of information literacy changes over time. With the advancement of technology, computer literacy is now considered to be an integral component of information literacy. -There was a large discussion on how one may use the services of a University Librarian. -Discussion concerning the differences in public librarians and university librarians showed me that some public librarians are glorified babysitters-sad.

How I plan to use this course to excel in my profession: -As I progress through my research on Peri-Implantitis and Minocycline use; I will need to review other scholarly articles as well as understand and apply what I read. -APA citation is a challenge for me and the librarian assigned to the dental school, Mary Ann Williams, is a wealth of knowledge and eager to assist!! I have no doubt I will need her services.
