Sands LNG Green Fuel Initiative

for Refrigerated F&B Transport
EARLY 2001
The Australian transport industry had nowhere to go with alternative fuel until Kleenheat Gas
met Sands Fridge Lines.Tony Smith from Kleenheat Gas approached Sands in WA after the Asia
Pacific Natural Gas Conference in Brisbane to propose a pilot study using emerging green fuel
liquified petroleum gas (LNG), as Kleenheat was planning to produce LNG for power generation
plants in WA.

NOVEMBER 2001
Sands trials Australia’s first road
train to run on LNG, FL10 (the 10th
Freightliner truck in the Sands fleet).
Today, FL10 has run more than 1.5
million green kilometres and is still
going strong.

A Freightliner truck like this one,

with a 410hp Caterpillar C12
engine running a 85% LNG fuel
system, pulled the world’s first
two-trailer road train in November
2001.

SEPTEMBER 2004
Sands trials Australia’s first 500hp
heavy transport vehicle with FL12.
FL12 will chalk a million green
kilometres by the end of 2009.

FL12 is a Freightliner truck with a

500hp Caterpillar C15 engine running
a 85% LNG fuel system capable of a
17% reduction in toxic greenhouse gas
emissions.

FL12 has LNG tanks mounted on the back of its trailer

cab and diesel tanks mounted on its flanks. Each truck
can carry 150 to 370kg of LNG in one to three tanks,
sufficient for long-haul trips of up to 1200km.

FL23, a 90-tonne prime mover fitted

with the C15 LNG system, carries
diesel and LNG tanks on its flanks.

supplied by Kleenheat Gas. Sands is the only transport
company in Australia with its own 23-tonne LNG
refueling station.

OCTOBER 2007
Sands trials Australia’s first road train to run on the 95%-LNG prototype High Pressure Direct
Injection (HPDI) fuel system on a prototype Kenworth truck, KW7.

The HPDI features a 25%

reduction in toxic greenhouse
gas emissions, improved
driveability, improved reliability,
and quicker refueling times.

JULY 2009
Sands trials Australia’s first refrigerated urban distribution vehicle to run on 100% LNG. Having
established a green fueled vehicle for urban distribution, Sands Fridge Lines now possesses the
technology to roll out a full fleet of long-haul transport and urban distribution vehicles that run on
green fuel.

Sands’ Isuzu spark-injected vehicle

requires no diesel and runs on
100% LNG.
