FRICTION: Basic Concepts

What forces are acting on block 2? What forces are acting on block 1? What could be done to block 1 that would slow the motion of block 2?

What IS friction?

The force that one surface exerts on another as they are rubbing against each other

How does friction act compared to the motion of the object?

! "!

The force of friction depends on these two factors:

A. The type of surfaces B. How hard the two surfaces are pushing against each other

How can friction be helpful?

How can friction be harmful?

There are three types of friction.

1. Sliding

Two solid surfaces rubbing against one another

2. Rolling

One object rolls over another

3. Fluid

One object moves through a fluid (ex: air or water)

Challenge: Name two different ways to reduce friction
