Friction

Friction and it’s nature

When you kick a ball have you observed that after some time
it comes to rest or halt or stop after some time though not
applying any force? Have you ever slipped on water? When
you hold the bottle in your hand why doesn’t it slip from your
hand? It is because of friction. It is the force between two
object to make the make the object in motion rest is frictional
force. The opposing force between two sliding bodies is called
frictional force When a body slides over the surfaces of
another body, the dents and irregularities comes in contact
with each other and motion of a sliding body and opposing
force is exerted to the motion of sliding body which creates
frictional force.
Frictional Force
Laws of Friction

The following ways are the laws of

friction :
1. Friction force acts in opposite
direction to the motion of the
body or an object.
2. Frictional force between two
surfaces in contact depends on the
state of roughness of the surface.
3. Frictional force between two
surfaces depends on the pressure
exerted by a sliding body.
4. Frictional force does not depend
on the amount of the surface area in
contact between the moving bodies
or on the relative speed of the body
Types of Friction
Static force
Static friction is
defined as the
frictional force that
acts between the
surfaces when they
are at rest with
respect to each
other. Example: Car
parked on a hill,
pushing a heavy
object etc.
Sliding friction
Sliding friction is
defined as the
resistance that is
created between any
two objects when
they are sliding
against each other.
Examples: Sliding
of the block across
the floor etc.
Rolling friction
It is a type of friction
in which the force
opposes the motion of
the body that is rolling
in the surface of
another body.
Example: rotating
wheel etc.
Kinetic friction

It is a force
that’s acts
between
moving
surfaces.
Advantages of friction
1. Friction enables us to walk freely.
2.It helps to support ladder against
wall.
3.It becomes possible to transfer one
form of energy to another.
4.Objects can be piled up without
slipping.
5. Football players use shoes with
spikes. It increases frictional force
between the ground and the shoes.
6. Use of brakes stops moving
vehicles and cycles.
7. It helps to write with a pen or
pencil on a sheet of paper due to
friction between the pen or pencil
and the paper
disadvantages of
friction

1. Friction produces heat that

causes objects to wear out.
2. Friction makes work
tedious. ...
3.Friction also causes sparks,
overheating and machine
breakdown.
4.Friction reduces speed.
5.Friction can also make
speeding objects to tumble
down and cause accidents.
Methods of reducing
friction
By polishing: friction can be
reduced by polishing the
surfaces so as to make them
smooth
By using lubricants: oils and
grease are lubricants which
are used to reduce friction and
make the sliding or rolling
surface smooth which
produces less friction
By rolling instead of sliding:
rolling a body is much easier
than sliding it over a surface.
So, ball bearing are used in
moving parts of machines.
This is greatly reduces
frictions.
