SLIDING FRICTION

Have you imagined how friction occurs in this setting?

Why do you think basketball players wear shoes with rubber soles instead of leather shoes?

What do you think will happen if they wear leather shoes?

 When you push an object like a book on the floor or table, sliding friction occurs.

 SLIDING FRICTION occurs between two surfaces that come in contact with each other.
Sliding friction acts in a direction opposite the direction of motion. In the case of a book, the
book moves forward while sliding friction is in the opposite direction.

 Sliding friction slows down the movement of the book or object that is moving. This sliding
friction prevents the object from moving forward as fast as it would.

 When sliding friction is acting on an object, other forces must be present to keep the object
moving. It could be a push or force of gravity when the object moves on a slope. Sliding
Friction occurs when two objects rub against each other or slide against each other. It is
caused by molecular adhesion between surfaces.

 We experience sliding friction when we try to slide a heavy object, like a table or chair. This
type of friction pushes in the opposite direction of the sliding. It depends on several factors,
such as the materials, the roughness, and the pressure.

ACTIVITY 1

Directions: Draw examples of sliding friction and give a short description about each picture you
have drawn. Use this table below. Draw and write your answers in your paper.

ACTIVITY 2

Directions: Write T if the statement is True and if the statement is False write F. Write your
answers in your paper.

__________1. Sliding friction occurs when two objects rub against each other or slide against

Each other.

__________2. The greatest friction shows on a polished floor or smooth surface.

__________3. More force is needed to pull the block of wood when friction is greater.

__________4. Sliding Friction acts in a direction opposite the direction of motion.

__________5. The rougher the surface, the faster an object will move over the surface.
