Chapter 9: Flowering Plants (6th Grade) Organization: Sign up for lab/iPad cart for section 9.1 Have copies made for students: diagram of flower parts, rubric for Webquest, study guide, pollination-to-fruit diagram, and quizzes and test Completed power point of chapter for Chapter Review 9.1 Angiosperm: Characteristics, Origin and Success, Importance (3 days) Introduction: Give pre-assessment to see where students are at with their knowledge of Angiosperms. (day 1) Provide rubrics for students to complete the Webquest with a partner (day 1) Finish Webquest if needed, PowerPoint on section 9.1, and go through section 9.1 questions in groups (day 2) Finish 9.1 questions if needed, Index card game post-assessment on section 9.1 (day 3) 9.2 Angiosperm Reproduction: Flower Structure and Function, Pollination, Fertilization (2 days) Show PowerPoint with some lecture on section 9.2 (day 1) Flower parts diagram: Hand out and have students complete in groups (day 1) Large group discussion on self-pollination and cross-pollination (day 2) Handout study guide for chapter with emphasis on completing sections 9.1, 9.2 & attempting section 9.3(day 2) 9.3 Angiosperm Growth and Development: Fruits and Seeds, Seed Dispersal, Seed Dormancy, Seed Germination, Growth Period (3 days) Quiz on sections 9.1 and 9.2 (day 1) Review of the past 2 sectionspower point and go over study guide (day 1) Hand out diagram of pollination-to-fruit and complete (day 1) Group work on Lesson Review questions (switching group members) (day 2) Large group discussion on Section 9.3 and questions (day 2) Quiz on section 9.3 (day 3) Three Fruits Lab, and have the students complete section 9.3 in study guide (day 3) 9.4 Angiosperm Classification: Monocots and Dicots, Families of Monocots and Dicots (3 days) Introduce Monocots and Dicots (day 1) Small Group Discussions on comparing and contrasting Monocots and Dicots (day 1) Activity 9.4 in different groups (day 2) Start outdoor activity (finding as many different leaves as they can) (day 2) Finish outside portion of lab if needed, inside work on labeling parts of the leaves, and have students complete section 9.4 in study guide forhomework (day 3) Review (1 day) Answer any questions students have on the study guide. Have to have a Game Day Review! Answer any questions students have about the test. Test (1 day)
