Section 1.4 Solving Absolute Value Equations

Absolute Value Expressions: The absolute value of a number is the number of units it is
from 0 on a number line. The symbol x is used to represent the absolute value.

EX 1 Evaluate − 4 − − 2 x ST 1 Evaluate - − 8 − 3 x
if x = 6 if x = 6

EX 2. Evaluate 2 x − 3 y ST 2 Evaluate 2 x − 15
if x = -4 and y =3 if x = -6

***For any real numbers a and b, where b>0, if a = b , then a= b or a= -b***

EX 3 Solve 2 x − 3 = 17 Check your solutions

Case I a=b Case II a= -b

2x – 3 = 17 2x – 3 = - 17

Check I Check II
ST 3 Solve y + 3 = 8 Check your solutions

Case I a=b Case II a= -b

Check I Check II

EX 4 Solve 5 x − 6 + 9 = 0

Case I a=b Case II a= -b

EX 5 Solve x + 6 = 3 x − 2 Check your solutions

Case I a=b Case II a= -b
