What is broadband?

Bandwidth equal to and above 256 Kbps has been defined as broadband by TRAI

Salient Features of Broadband

It provides a means to bill based on Volume of data downloaded. It will provide Multicast Video Services, Videoon-demand such as IPTV in future Can share Broadband connection to create own LAN network i.e. more than one PC can be connected.

What is IPTV

IPTV
IPTV is basically a fusion of voice, video, and data service bundled in a single format for delivery

result of high bandwidth and high speed Internet infrastructure built recently

IPTV
History In 1994, ABC's World News Now was the first television show to be broadcast over the Internet, using the CU-SeeMe Videoconferencing software

IPTV vs Internet Television

IPTV Similar to cable TV service with lot of value added elements and improved performance

Internet Television
It is an open evolving framework where a stored contents from small and mediumsized video producers are accessed through web

IPTV Triple Play

IPTV is bundled with - Video on Demand (VOD)

Voice over IP (VOIP) over phone

- Standard TV channel
- High Definition TV channel

- Web access or browsing

Network components

Access network

Broadband network capable of providing desired bandwidth to end user as required by the content application.

Network Components
Middleware Helps in:
-

The Authentication of The users. Keeping the profile of all services.

Users to modify account by communicating with the directory server.

for displaying the balance of user account.

- Generates CDR and sent to the billing server .

Network Components
Content Protection System (CPS)
-secure delivery of the content using description keys.

Element Management System (EMS)

controls content delivery to the user upon getting authorization from the MW. keep a record of services delivered for billing purpose. provide on demand type of service

Network Components

Video Head end system

reception and storage of contents from broadcast source and video source in high end servers

Network Components
Advertisement Insertion Server Inserting the advertisement into the content streams.

Directory server Storing the user profile along with the settings and password. Billing System Billing of content services shall be on either pre-paid or post paid.

Network Components
Aggregator
The output stream is connected to a core IP switch called Aggregation switch. This is used to connect a gateway server at one end and to BRAS at the other end.

Broadband remote access server(BRAS)

This is the place where the multicasting is done
DHCP server - Allocates IP address to an host STB as and when a user wants to use a program on TV. The program is selected at the STB by the Electronic program guide EPG.

Uses IGMP to control the membership of an host on confirmation host.

Network Components
The Switch
Forwarding the multicast packet received from the Encoder to the Broadband Aggregation Switch.

The switch does not allow all outputs to be connected to all inputs. The switch can act as a testing point for the multicast packets.

Network Components
Encoder
Input to the Encoder for each chl is in MPEG-2 format

Encoder uses advanced compression techniques for converting High bandwidths to deliverable size

RTP and IP address to each Encoder or channel is also added

The output Packet of the Encoder will be a multicast packet consisting of : MPEG4 ( bit stream) Source IP Address Destination IP Add and RTP

Network Components
Customer Premise Equipment (CPE)
ADSL MODEM Set Top Box TV set

Remote Control

Set Top Box is required for providing Content Based Services to the users of any IP based network.

IPTV Backbone Network

One SDTV requires 4 Mb One HDTV channel requires 20 Mb Backbone Network of any Service Provider requires a capacity of around 800 Mb for delivering 100 SDTV and 20 HDTV channels This also provides 2 Mb for browsing

IPTV Operation

IPTV OPERATIONS
Set Top Box

STB is an Intelligent device

STB delivers IP based contents to an end user Interface to IP based access network by Access modem provide content presentation in suitable form. used for Streaming based content service or/and Web based browsing. STB is programmable and support I. Video codec MPEG-2 MPEG-4 2. Audio Codec

IPTV OPERATIONS
Set Top Box (STB)

To Decode the cencoded content STB supports two video streams simultaneously (P-in-P). It also Supports:

Unicast and Multicast. 10 bit A/D converter. CIF (352X288, Common Intermediate Format in PAL) for video SIP ( Session Initiation Protocol) forVoIP Client Software for playing the Content on the TV

SET-TOP BOX
Aminet 130H Ethernet STB with AVC and HD support By Visionary Solotions Inc.

DECODER
AmiNET 110H Decoder for MPEG-2 AVN Encoded Streams

IP Encoder
AVN 200 MPEG-2 IP Audio-Video Node By Visionary Solutions Inc USA

IPTV OPERATIONS

The TV signals received by dish antenna are fed to Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD), which converts the RF signals in to digital form. Its output in MPEG-2 format is sent to a splitter which distributes the digital stream which sends it to an ENCODER.

Protocols used in IPTV operations

Transmission Control Protocol TCP Internet Control Message Protocol ICMP Internet Protocol Control Protocol IPCP Address Resolution Protocol- ARP Real Time Streaming Protocol RTSP Real Time Control (RTCP) Dynamic Host Control Protocol Protocol - DHCP Internet Group Management Protocol IGMP Password Authentication Protocol PAP Challenge Handshake Authentication protocol CHAP

IPTV OPERATIONS

The Encoder Output using MPEG-4 format

is a compressed video

The RTP information and Multicast IP address are added here The output is then fed to DSLAM equipment in the Telephone Exchanges The STB at subscribers home converts the received signal to the form acceptable by TV .

IPTV Working

The MPEG-4 Stream in the form of multicast group is continuously flowing into the BRAS. BRAS is continuously generating General membership query to all hosts.

As soon as a viewer start STB and select a particular channel, STB will generate a Request for a particular channel to BRAS and place a Membership Report to BRAS.
BRAS will place that specific host in a multicast group, and start forwarding the replicated copies of the stream to that specific host.
