Street Baana

Baana is old railway line to west container harbour of Helsinki. Harbour activities were removed out of city and railway got out of use. Since old harbour area will be converted to residential area there was need to organize good connection between center of city and new residential area. Rails were removed and replaced by pedestrian and bicycle road. It serves also all bicycle trafic towards west of city and neighbour city. his fast connection has raised amount of people cycling to work and helps to reduce !"# emissions. $s all crossing streets are in different level % kilometers distance trough dence city area to old west harbour by bicycle is very fast. $rea has been &ust changed and some changes are still to come. 'Sketching %km long road was hard and impossible to get to fit here sensibly. But small piece shows anyway the idea. (ossibility to move without sopping to streetlights)

Senate s*uare + sar,s stairs

Senate s*uare was already on -hrenst.ms original plan of Helsinki /012. It is center of old grid layout city. It is one of the best e3cample of neoclassical s*uare in -urope. 4onumetal stairs in front of cathedral were not on original plan. hey were personal order from sar 5ikolai I of Russia. "riginal idea was to bring monumental look. Stairs are facing south and have become popular place to sit down en&oying sun during short finnish summer. $lso used by many students as place to read between lectures. Helsinki university is located &ust ne3t to s*uare. Stairs are good e3cample of small idea of one person which became important public space in city. S*uare itself is stable6 buildings on southside has been &ust changed from offices to shops and restaurants.

Idea in It78(asila is to separate cars and public transport away from yards6 parks6 pedestrians and bicycles. (artly yards and pedestrian lanes are going on #nd floor partly streets are dug underground. his makes area very comfortable for kids6 pedestrians and bicycles. (arking is organized in halls locating under buildings. here is only few roads in area where car transportation is allowed. 4ost of streets are for pedestrian and bicycles only. $rea is relatively stable.
