Residents plan for town's future

Residents, business and land owners, developers, government officials, regional workers 
and shoppers all met on Thursday evening to plot the future of Dickson's town centre. 
 
About 60 people attended the meeting at Dickson Tradies where they were split into 
groups to attack maps of Dickson with highlighters, post‐its and pens – each mark 
representing a change they would like to see happen.  
 
The meeting worked as a continuation of the consultation process, in which residents 
have voiced several key concerns regarding the development of their town. Despite the 
room being split into 10 groups, several key themes came through when ideas were 
pooled at the end of the meeting. 
 
Some of these included: 
• More green space in the town centre with suggestions several landmark buildings 
and businesses be moved; 
• Improved traffic conditions around the Cowper Street and Dickson Place junction; 
• Construction of at least one more supermarket as well as expanding the current 
range of shops to include the likes of a hardware store, a cinema and additional 
alfesco dining;  
• Links between east and west Dickson with the focus being Badham Street 
rejuvenation; 
• More efficient and accessible public transport; and  
• A combination of outdoor and structural car parking, possibly utilising underground 
green spaces. 
 
Those at the meeting made it clear the current character and amenities included in the 
Dickson town centre would need to be retained and expanded in any development. 
There was concern the "Asian feel" of Dickson could be lost with development ‐ several 
residents suggested this would be a great loss for the entire area. 
 
"We can not lose the Asian feel of Woolley Street ‐ the little supermarkets and 
multicultural feel of the place is magic – it is one of the things that really draws people 
to Dickson and it has to be maintained” one resident said. 
 
Director of Purdon Planning Sustainable Futures, (the planning group charged with 
conducting the meetings) Christine Purdon, said while the plans proposed at the 
meeting were at this stage only dreams, it was important to have ideas to work towards. 
She encouraged everyone to unleash big, small and absurd ideas and said at this stage 
nothing was off limits. 
 
"We are not going to be able to meet everyone's exact desires, but I encourage 
everyone to really go for it, get your ideas down, this is the visioning stage and on the 
plans in front of you, anything is possible," she said. 
 
The same process will take place for Kingston town centre on Thursday, October 22.
