CHAPTER 5

DETACHED DIVER
GENERAL 5-1. During diver operations there will be instances when divers will detach from the submarine for the following reasons: a. b. c. Diver depth limitations are reached; Requirement to conduct casualty evacuation procedure to assist an injured diver to the surface; and Unable to maintain position due to external influences like increases in current or submarine speed.

5-2. In most instances if a diver becomes detached, the diver will inform the DSO-S and will ascend to the surface to await recovery by the submarine or continue with current operations. Table 51 details the procedure noting that if the diver ascends to the surface there may be a requirement for the submarine to surface to recover the detached diver. Table 51

TASK

NOTE Divers will normally ascend to the surface if they become detached from the submarine during operations. The DSO-S must inform the Control Room immediately of whether the diver is going to remain dived or is going to ascend to the surface to await recovery. 2 3 DSO-S SCOOW Crew Report to CR DETACHED DIVER. TASK

NOTE The CO and SOLO may decide that the best method for recovery of the detached diver may be to surface the submarine if the recovery vessel is unavailable. This may require divers external to the CT to be prepared for the submarine to surface. The DRT is to standby to assist in recovering the detached diver once the submarine has surfaced. If the submarine is to surface whilst divers remain external the submarine is conduct modified surfacing procedure.
