LABORATORY ACTIVITY PAPER CHROMATOGRAPHY

Different colors of dye are mixed to produce black ink. In this activity, youll find out what colors are used using a technique called paper chromatography. I. Objective To determine the colors that makes up a black ink. II. Materials Filter paper Pen with black ink Erlenmeyer flask

Procedure 1. Cut a strip of filter paper 2 cm wide and 2 cm higher than the Erlenmeyer flask. 2. Using a pen, place a small dot of black ink about 1.5 cm from one end of filter paper. 3. Make a solvent solution by mixing water, ethyl alcohol, and acetone. 4. Pour enough amount of solvent solution to cover the bottom of the filter paper but not enough to reach the ink dot. 5. Place the filter paper in Erlenmeyer flask with the dot end at the bottom side. 6. Allow the system to stand for several minutes. Setup
