Lesson Title: Atoms, Elements & the Periodic Table

Terminal Objective: By the end of this lesson, each SWBAT explain the relationship between atomic number and atomic mass of elements on the periodic table. Content Standard: Arizona State Standards: Grade 8 Science Strand 5: Physical Science Concept 1: Properties and Changes in Properties in Matter PO 1: Identify different kinds of matter based on physical properties Language Standard: Stage IV Listening & Speaking (LI-9): Summarizing main ideas and supporting details from content area presentations and discussions

Task Analysis (Sub-Objectives w/ Bloom)

Teaching Strategies
Bellwork: Present a written prompt (anticipatory set) to the students for their written response

Active Student Participation (Check for Understanding)

Each student will answer the following prompt in their composition books: When you have the flu, how do you know a virus is present even though you cant see it? What evidence do you have that the virus is having an effect on your health? Students will T/P/S with a partner.

10 min SWBAT describe their previous knowledge about the presence of matter and energy in the universe. Bloom: Knowledge
