43% of all the Tory led coalition governments cuts will have been made in local government by 2016! This is more than in any other public service. Almost half a million local government jobs have been lost in the UK since 2010. National local government pay has fallen by 18% since the coalition government came to power.

Austerity isnt working

In Wolverhampton, over 400 council jobs have now been cut since 13 September 2013 and the first Civic Hall meetings. This will have taken approximately 12 million from an already struggling local economy.

And yet todays message from Wolverhampton City Council is clear

Today you have heard the Chief Executive say that he is going to consult with UNISON on proposals such as: a reduction in contractual hours from 37 to 35 a two year freeze on increments, reduction of sick pay

Services to the public in Wolverhampton are being either slashed or abolished as the Labour council passes the latest attacks onto its loyal workforce and service users, even after admitting in December 2013, that it was most unlikely that the books could be balanced in 2015/16 without putting services that the council is required to provide by lawlike caring for the elderly or emptying bins at risk! (Councillor Andrew Johnson, Cabinet Member for Resources19 December 2013)

PRIVATISATION IS NOT THE ANSWER!!

UNISON has already been informed that a report going to Cabinet on 4 March 2014 will be calling for the privatisation of both Adults & Childrens services, potentially transferring over 500 staff into the profit hungry private sector and without doubt further attacks on terms and conditions to drive up those profits at the expense of service delivery standards.
