Just about everyone has seen a television show or movie in which a criminal suspect is questioned while detectives watch

from behind a one-way mirror. How does a piece of glass manage to reflect light from one side while remaining clear on the other? The secret is that it doesn't. A one-way mirror has a reflective coating applied in a very thin sparse layer -- so thin that it's called a half-silvered surface. The name half-silvered comes from the fact that the reflective molecules coat the glass so sparsely that only about half the molecules needed to ma!e the glass an opaque mirror are applied. At the molecular level there are reflective molecules spec!led all over the glass in an even film but only half of the glass is covered. The half-silvered surface will reflect about half the light that stri!es its surface while letting the other half go straight through. "t turns out that half-silvered mirrors are also essential to many types of lasers -- see How #asers $or! for details. %o why doesn't the &criminal suspect& see the detectives in the ne't room? The answer lies in the lighting of the two rooms. The room in which the glass loo!s li!e a mirror is !ept very brightly lit so that there is plenty of light to reflect bac! from the mirror's surface. The other room in which the glass loo!s li!e a window is !ept dar! so there is very little light to transmit through the glass. (n the criminal's side the criminal sees his own reflection. (n the detectives' side the large amount of light coming from the criminal's side is what they see. "n many ways it's the same as if people were whispering in one room while a loud stereo played in the other. The sound of the whisper might carry into the room with the stereo but it would be drowned out by the intensity of the music. "f the lights in the room with the mirror are suddenly turned out or the lights in the observation room suddenly turned on then the one-way mirror becomes a window with people in each room able to see those in the other. )ou can see this effect in any mirrored office building at night -- if the light is on in an office you can see into the office *ust fine.

D photgraphy' also known as stereo photography' is nothing new( )ut while it is easy to make D photos' D &iewers are still &ery primiti&e *think a!out those orr!ile !lu+re" glasses or anaglyphs' or cross+eye &ision ,' or &ery expensi&e *like stereo pro-ectors,( .hat / 0oun" was that a "e&ice 0or &iewing D photos' cheap an" easy to use' was still not a&aila!le( So' i ma"e one( .ell' / hope" to make a pro"uct an" !e a!le to sell it' !ut at the en"' / ha" still my prototype laying here' so let's at least make an instructa!le out o0 it 1, Support this instructa!le2 /0 clicking on the line a!o&e "oes not work' use this in0o1 3ay to1 1%)S4w5"L)6rD78T94y0w:L65;)49TV3<L 8essage1 Support the author1 "onate with )itcoin2

Step 1: How it works.

The !asic i"ea is always the same1 you must ha&e two photos' two images' o0 an o!-ect( =ne is what the le0t eye woul" see' the other is what the right eye woul" see( 9sually you get these two images with two cameras' or !y taking a photo an" sli"ing the camera hori4ontally 0or >+< cm' that is the "istance 0rom one eye to the other( Then' you show the two images to people' managing in some way that their le0t eye sees only the image taken with the le0t camera' an" their right eye sees only the image taken with the camera on the right(

/0 you manage to "o so' no matter how' they will see a D image o0 the o!-ect you photographe"(

Step 2: Polarization

7ere we call our new' 0rien"' polari4ation( .hat is polari4ation? /t is a characteristic o0 light' such as color an" intensity' !ut that you can't see with your eyes( Think o0 it as an orientation o0 the light( )asically' light is ma"e o0 photons' that go in ran"om "irections( 9sing a 0ilter calle" polari4er' you can 0orce them to go in one precise "irection( /0 you rotate the 0ilter' you rotate the polari4ation o0 the light too( /0 you look through a polari4er 0ilter in 0ront oy our eye' to an image with another 0ilter o&er it' you'll see that i0 !oth 0ilters are rotate" the same "irection' you can see ithe image' i0 one is rotate" @A "egrees an" the other is rotate" at A "egrees' you will !lock exactly the "irection you 0orce" the light to go' so(( you wll see a !lack image( Bow imagine we ha&e two images on the ta!le' !oth with a polari4er 0ilter o&er it' one 0ilter rotate" at @A "egrees an" the other at 1#A "egrees( .e also ha&e two small 0lters in 0ornt o0 each eye' again one rotate" at @A "egrees an" the other at 1#A "egreesC .hat we get is the the le0t eye sees the le0t image' !ut not the right one( Dn" same goes 0or the right eye( So we ha&e our 0irst achie&ement1 to make sure the each eye sees only what we want it to see(

/s it D alrea"y? Bo( /n or"er to achie&e D' the tow images must !e in the same exact place' one o&er the other' !oth &isi!le( /mpossi!le?

Step 3: Half-silvered mirrors

To optically merge two images' we will nee" the help o0 an 7al0+Sil&ere" mirror( /t is nothing more than a glass that has !een sil&ere" *the process that makes a piece o0 glass a re0lecting piece o0 glass, hal0 o0 what it woul" !e 0or a normal mirror( So we ha&e an hal0 re0lecting' hal0 pass+through mirror( 7ow we use it?

The image !elow shoul" explain(

Step 4: Overview

So !asically we will ha&e two photo0rames' each one will show the le0t an" right image o0 a stereo photo' an" the hal0+sil&ere" mirror will com!ine the two images( .ith the polari4ing glasses on' we will see a stereo D image( /n the picture' the !lues rectangles are the screens' an" the !lack line is the hla0+sil&ere" mirror( /0 you ha&e starte" 0ollowing me' *an" / know that my instructions can !e a !it har" to rea",'

you will say that we also nee" to put a polari4er 0ilm o&er !oth screens in or"er to polari4e the image coming 0orm them( 7ere comes a nice trick1 LCD screens DLEEDD; 7DVE a polari4er 0ilm o&er them( Try to look at your monitor through a piece o0 polari4ing 0ilm' an" you will notice it imme"iately2 Dn" the e&en more 0unny thing is' that a mirror also in&erts polari4ation( This means' that really all we nee" is the two "isplays' an hal0 sil&ere" mirror' an" a pair o0 glasses with polari4in lenses *later we'll see how to make them, an" we ha&e a D "isplay( Cool' isn't it?

Step !: "ssem#l$

8easure the si4e o0 the "igital photo0rame' not only the screen' !ut the !or"er aroun" it as well( Cut a rectangle with this si4e 0rom the hal0+sil&ere" mirror piece' using a cutter( ;ou can use &arious materials 0or the structureC here / show you how you can e&en use a 0ew DVD cases you alrea"y ha&e at home( Cut H rectanges out o0 a "&" case so you can make a 0rame 0or the mirror( Ilue them to the mirror(

%or the hinges that will keep together the 2 photo0rames an" the mirror' cut the "&" case as shown in 0igure 1( Lay one photo0rame on a ta!le' with the screen 0acing upwar"s( put the mirror o&er it' an" the other photo0rame on the top' with the screen 0acing "ownwar"( Check that the 2 "isplays are 3EE%ECTL; aligne"( Eeally' this is the most important step2 To align them 1 +turn the two photo0rames on( +sa&e the attache" 0iles JpatternKtestKsxJ an" JpatternKtestK"xJ( +3ut the 0iles patternKtestKsx an" patternKtestK"x on a memory car" or us!
