ANALYSIS
Media Studies Summer Work
by Grace Scott
Layout
 The layout of this cover is very
clear for the reader to understand
the contents that are featured
within it.
 The very top gives a brief outline
of the issue.
 The title is clearly legible even with
the central image overlapping it.
 The left side of this cover
contains all information relevant to
the image (the movie of the Dark
Knight)
 The right side explains what extra
material is inside to attract a larger
range of readers.
 The bottom left provides space for
the image and the vital bar code!
Use of Images
 This image of the iconic prison
scene in “Batman Dark Knight”
which takes up the entire
background cover space, however
the character of the joker who is
the special feature is cleverly
positioned in front of the magazine
title to draw the eye.
 This is a great choice of image as
the costume worn is brightly
coloured and the pose indicates
the foreboding that the subtitles
are describing.
 The bat silhouette above the
jokers head is a promotional
symbol for the Dark Knight, which
is relevant and helps gain
awareness of the new symbol that
is now being used for the Batman
franchise.
Use of text  The use of text is very basic,
it gives all required
information such as:
 the title,
 price,
 a brief outline of the main
topic of the issue,
 and other material in the sell
lines of new movie releases.
 A quote is used to describe
the character, which typed
across the chest, can be
clearly viewed.
 Various celebrity names are
dropped to grab the readers
attention, one of which is in a
brightly coloured text box.

How does the cover successfully
Attract the target audience?
 Empire Magazine is a film magazine that promotes, reviews and
interviews all things to do with movies, therefore, the target audience
has great interest in all these, which is usually a teen age group of
both genders.
 The Dark Knight is a film that also has a large teen audience which
is what probably made Empire magazine decide to choose that
particular film as the key feature in the issue.
 The actor who played the Joker (Heath Ledger) is a favourite among
teens, and he had never played a role like this before, making the
audience curious to learn more.
 Many other films that are popular among teens such as Sweeney
Todd, the Mummy 3, 10.000 BC, Wanted and No Country for Old
Men are all mentioned giving a wider range of material for the reader
to enjoy.
 The cover itself is brightly coloured with large key words that jump
out to the audience such as the words “Joker”, “Coens” and “Plus”.
Exclamation marks are also used to attract attention.
In conclusion…
 This magazine cover
successfully attracts the
audiences attention with the
use of Image, colour, key
words, font, and
presentation.
 The next slide will show all
the images and thoughts that
come to mind when looking
at this cover, this will show
