Analyse the following newspaper article.

Focus on its layout, headline, language, it’s

target group and orientation (objective/subjective/etc.) and use of images.

The image at hand is the front page of a newspaper distributed by “News of the World”.
The layout, headline size as well as the language employed clearly indicate that this is a tabloid
newspaper that is not very serious and focuses on celebrity drama and sports in order to attract
readers.
The front page is constructed in such a way to quickly attract one’s eyes trough big and
provoking images such as that of a man consuming cocaine, which takes up around two thirds
of the entire page. Other smaller images are also plastered in the remaining space left on the
cover. The images work together with the design of the main and secondary headlines in order
to further keep the attention of whoever glanced over the newspaper in a boutique store. The
function of most of the layout is to attract the eyes of any potential buyer trough colourful and
shocking images and then further intrigue them with short, provocative headlines.
The mostly colloquial language of the headlines which exclusively uses first names
further underlines its provocative function. It’s on the one hand meant to shorten the text thus
making it easier to read and therefore attract eyes, on the other it also serves the purpose of
criticising the given celebrities by not referring politely to them. This can be seen in the main
headline where both the name “Kerry Katona” as well as the word “cocaine” have been
shortened to “Kate” and “coke” respectively so that the resulting text sound more attractive and
fits better on the page.
The language in the remaining parts of the front page is also screaming for attention.
Over most of the secondary images there is the word “exclusive” to be seen in all red caps as
well as the trifold repetition of “more” again in all caps on the top right sports advertisement.
Other words such as “bombshell video” at the bottom of the page and “It’s back” at its top further
try to capture the viewers’ attention. As seen in the language the orientation of the newspaper is
very subjective mostly criticising certain celebrities, but not in a very thorough way and mostly
focusing on the human-interest part of the story, trying to base its arguments of the readers
emotions rather than rationale.
Overall, I think the target group of this newspaper are mostly readers looking for a short
update on sports or in some cases on celebrity drama. I can imagine many buying this type of
newspaper for a quick read while transiting to mostly pass the time

The text is very well written. I couldn’t find any vocabulary or grammatical mistakes. My
only advice is to write the text in paragraphs, at least 3.
