Physical Plants Campus Division Crew honored for their decorative concrete work

Feb. 13, 2014 by Maggie Stephens The Physical Plants Campus Division was recently honored for work on an IU Bloomington campus landmark that people walk over every day but rarely notice: the limestone Walnut Grove sidewalk near Assembly Hall. Completed during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration, the walkway is one of many historical landmarks on campus. After 80 years of weather and wear, the sidewalk was cracked and broken. Last fall, vice president for Capital Planning and Facilities Tom Morrison asked for the sidewalk renovation to be prioritized, as the walkway is viewed by many as an entryway to campus. Budget was a major concern, especially since the sidewalk stretches 1,222 feet all the way from 13th to 17th street. IU and the City of Bloomington wanted to maintain the historical nature of the sidewalk as cost-efficiently as possible. Rather than limestone, they used a stamped ash-white concrete. Creating the custom concrete stamp sidewalk near Assembly Hall. required for the project was estimated to be about $10,000. Fortunately, Campus Divisions own employees have experience building concrete stamps; a small group of construction personnel headed up by Mike Lindsey handcrafted the stamp. The team managed to construct the stamp for only $200. The goal was to have the project completed by the first home basketball game. I thought it would be impossible to accomplish that, said Doug Sanders, Campus Division construction foreman. The Campus Division team worked on the project daily, regardless of weather conditions. The team even built a greenhouse out of PVC pipe and plastic so they could pour concrete when it rained. While the project wasnt officially completed by the first home game, it was open for traffic, and spectators were able to admire the work. Campus Division won the Outstanding Concrete Award from the Indiana Ready Mix Concrete Association for the project after being nominated by Irving Materials, Inc.

This team is capable of doing anything, Sanders said. The group previously won an award from the association and was once nominated for a national award from the World of Concrete. Read more Campus Life stories
