BAMBINO PRESCHOOL (contd) Note from parent: My son is 3 and attending Bambino preschool near the Hotel Dharmawangsa and not far from the American Club or Taman Puri Oasis. I live in TPO and walk him there every morning. I love it! They are very engaged- sing songs in the morning with the parents and children when you drop them off and the kids love it and so do I. Great playground and play time every day. *****
BINTANG MONTESSORI
Jl. Benda #4, South Jakarta Tel: 7892676 Fax: 7806079 Web: www.bintang-montessori.com Email: info@bintang-montessori.com Note from parent: So far so good. Their website says extended day (8 am -12:30 am instead of 11:30 am) is only for kids 5 years and older, but they seem flexible about this rule. Our 4 year old does an extended day. It is also the only pre-school I have found in the south that does some instruction in Bahasa as opposed to exclusively in English or English with Mandarin option or international schools that offer French, Dutch, etc. Instruction is in English from M-Th, and Bahasa on F. (Again, though, they seem flexible about this, and parents can have their kids 'opt-out' of the Bahasa Friday. However, it was one of the reasons we chose this particular pre-school). So far, I have not encountered any other US embassy families at this school. There are a few expats, but most of the children in the school are Indonesian and native Bahasa Indonesia speakers. *****

DISCOVERY CENTER (contd) Note from parent: Our 2 year old attends Discovery Center in Menteng. We were sold by the studentteacher ratio: at times it is 2-1 and occasionally 1-1. It's also very play-based and security conscious, which I like for little kids. Note from parent: I would recommend the Discovery Center in Cipete. My daughter is in her second year there, and my son has just started. They take kids as young as 2 up to 5. They only focus on early childhood education, unlike some schools that just add on a preschool class. Beth Shang is the director and has instituted a Montessori -ish approach, taking the best of that method, but combining it with other methods that allow a little more freedom to the children. The children still work in stations and have a variety of teachers. They do some innovative things like yoga and cooking classes as well as numbers, letters, physical education and music. Their after school classes are great and include Indonesian culture like dance, angklung, and batik classes as well as computers, science, painting, and writing skills. My kids adore it, its close to Kemang, and the teachers are great. They also have 2 other campuses that have the same structure. They take children with special needs and mainstream them with the regular classes. *****
KIDEA
Apartment Executive Menteng Jl. Pegangsaan Barat Kav 6-12, Menteng Central Jakarta Tel: 3926088 Web: www.kidea.sch.id Email: menteng@kidea.sch.id Kidea Pre-school and Kindergarten believes that Early Childhood Education is a commitment to develop a strong foundation of education that is suitable for the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and cognitive characteristics that would maximize the growth and development of a child as a preparation for a higher level of education. They use a Montessori-inspired curriculum. Note from parents: My daughter is currently enrolled at Kidea in Executive Menteng Apartments and she loves it. We have been very pleased with this preschool. I am happy to mention that our son attends KIDEA Preschool and Kindergarten. He joined in Feb 2010 at 22 months. He loves it. The teachers and caretakers are great, well trained, patient and truly have early childhood education/ training. He loves his little school and teachers and is eager to attend every other day. We are happy with the school and the program and will keep him there until we are ready to depart Post. It is a small Preschool that provides excellent early childhood education by applying the Montessori approach. They enroll kids from walking to 6 years old. The younger kids (3 and below) enjoy a playschool set up with simplified instruction in arts and crafts, music and play. They have options to attend two days a week or three days a week for two hours. Kids from 4 - 6 have more of a preschool kind of program and attend every day for 2 - 3 hours. Classes have 4 - 8 kids with 2 or 3 teacher/ assistants. *****
NETHERLAND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (contd) The past few weeks have been water themes: ocean animals, sailboats, submarines, etc. Every Friday they have swimming lessons in the shallow pool, and theres also a deeper pool for the older kids. Here is their website: http:// www.nis.or.id/. Im sure they would be happy to give you a tour if youre interested. The school is too far south for most of the apartment dwellers, but its in range for anyone at the American Club or Kemang Club Villas and other southern housing. If RSO does any security reviews of schools, NIS could use the help. Theyve grown a lot in the last couple years and I think they are struggling with access control and some other security issues. *****
