Writing Rubric

" Convention Student uses accurate punctuation and capitalization. Sentence Fluency Student uses a mixture of simple and complex sentences. There is a rhythm behind sentences. Few choppy or run-on sentences. Sentences are complete and make sense. Organization Student has clear structure to writing. Student uses transitional words. Student has an opening and closing. Style and Voice Student tries interesting words. Shows own personality in appropriate ways. Content/Ideas Student stays on topic, and is thorough with interesting details. Student has variety in their writing. Uses "showing" or "descriptive" detail effectively. Spelling Student writes most sight words correctly and uses best guess spelling.

Note to teacher: I use these rubrics because every year I have such variety in my students abilities. I consider 12 points the average benchmark. My grading scale is S, E, or N but I know every school is different. I have 12-17 points as an S, 18-22 is an S+ and 23-24 is an E. I like these rubrics because they show parents areas of strength and areas of growth. I use The 3rd rubric at the end of the year when I have some really great writers!
